I've already proven that their sign isn't original, having been done in a nearby state a few years ago...

I've already said that being denied entry to the prom is the fitting consequence.

Finding out there are consequences for stupid actions seems to me to be one of the best ways to continue developing the Abby Normal teenage brain

I am glad you dropped your whole far right wing idea that basically saying the label of black people being cotton pickers is not a racist label.

But I am also calling you out you inserted a sneaking far right wing myth of black people owning slaves.
We both know that this isn't the case. You're just eyeballing the figure how many black people bought from white and jewish slave owners to set them free.

I'm pretty sure it's been established that there were black people owning slaves in the US.....

Although what that has to do with anything in this thread would cause me to read all the posts AND care how that deflection from the topic was introduced (obviously not by you).

It actually has been done twice before... at least
Riverview High School in Sarasota, Florida, 2018
and in Clear Fork High School, Ohio 2019

As far as I know, the kids both got banned from attending the prom.

As mentioned in my previous post. The black people bought slaves to free them. It's a nazi-like myth to claim that black people bought slaves all the time just like whites and Jews to slave them around in the cotton fields. And I do believe black, slavery and cotton is on topic.

Funny, the example I posted in #19 was from Minnesota last year... no word on how their prom attendance was handled....

Extremely tangentially.... the topic is not who owned slaves... the topic is racist prom signs...

I've read articles that there were black slave owners looking to compete economically with white slave owners......

It obviously wasn't the same volume of white slaveowners and there is little reporting on if the treatment of slaves was better (imagine it was), but the number isn't zero

Your contention is that no black person ever owned slaves?

The topic is indeed about racist prom sings. A poster contested that the sign was racist, and so enter the realm of what the text is about... and so you end up discussing who owned slaves and who were the slaves. The poster claimed more black people owned slaves compared to the Jews. And undoubtingly somewhere somehow a black person might have owned a slave to indeed slave around. It's remains a nazi like myth to claim this happened so frequently. The claim is founded on the stats that black people bought slaves, and "accidentally omitting" they did it to end their slavery.

I'm afraid that I ca't read every Post from every thread but I'll take your word for their sign not being original material.

If creating an original prom invitation was one of the requirements and if it can be proven that they knowingly copied an existing sign then there should be mild consequences for plagiarism.

Otherwise, I don't think that these students should be punished for exercising their 1st Amendment rights.

They should, however, be taught that with rights come responsibilities by writing a brief paper on how their sign could be hurtful and even inflammatory to Black people.

    Thanks,

LOL... I'm guessing being forced to write something they don't believe or understand would be more painful than missing prom...

You are going full BEAST MODE on these 2....

Bullshit. The school can ban the kids from the prom for any damn reason. The kids have no right to attend extracurricular activities.

When my son was in high school he anonymously made critical remarks about his baseball coach online (and no they weren't profane). The school found out it was him and the AD threw him off the team. What my son did pales to openly racist remarks. I think the kids in the OP should not be allowed to attend the prom.

What this dumb kid did pales in comparison to what kids are going to do at the prom.

I know nothing about these students except that in attempting to be clever they did something foolish.

How would you attempt to show them that with rights come responsibilities?

Could they ban them for their race? Like, could they just ban all the white kids? Or all the black ones?

    This is true.
Drinking off school grounds, wreckless driving, out of control parties, fights off school grounds, and offensive online material are all grounds for punishment to school students.

Anyone can sue for anything. It may get their punishment lightened, but way to raise a bunch entitled brats that will never learn accountability.

It was in response to that. Extracurricular activities are privlages that can be revoked for posting offensive content online from even your home. It happens all the time.
Bullying off achoolgrounds, drunk driving, harassment, etc. Are all subject to disciplinary action even off achool property if you are a student, or teacher.

The Supreme Court JUST addressed this last year: schools are not, generally, permitted to punish students for off-campus speech. They can't even take away extra-cirricular activities, like kicking a student off the cheerleader squad. It's a violation of the First Amendment. There are a few narrow exceptions, none of which apply in this case.
