Internet Trolls, how pathetic are they?

This is my boy 10 years ago in Iraq. I blurred his face and that of the nurse.

The trolls would never say to him in person what they say on line. Never.

 

He is a fine young man and honorable and I wish him and you and your family all the best.

When some troll on the net says he hopes my son gets his legs blown off, in my mind's eye I see a pathetic, male-envious little punk who knows he's a punk and who will never amount to anything. I think this sort has always been around, but without the outlet the net provides.

I haven't experienced anything like that on this site, and it's the only one I hang around on anymore, other than FB a bit. I like the net, but the trolls are just the down side. One thing I've learned is that the worst thing you can do is respond to a troll. They hate to be ignored! The best way to get back at them ... is to do nothing, like they don't exist. They like the attention, so I learned not to give it to them.

To many, "the military" is sort of an abstract concept. "Casualties" become a political football to some and a measure of success or failure to others. But to those of us who have been in war, or close to it through our families, "the military" is not an abstract concept - it is real people. "Casualties" are not just numbers. There is almost nothing so life-changing as being close to it all. I know you know what I mean.

The asshats that trolled, should have Ben Gay in their shorts, & do a 10 mile forced march.

 

It can be organised too; I've been a member of boards where I was targeted by a bunch of about 5-6 for the sole purpose of provoking me into resigning. I have strong opinions on a few things . . . Oi, who said 'Yeah we've noticed!' take that for yer cheek! . . . so I guess they were miffed by something I said.

 

I have at least 15 trolls on 'ignore' best way to deal with 'em.

I got banned from my last one even though it was the trolls who were causing all the the trouble: it was quite obvious that the moderators found it easier for a quiet life to ban me. Subsequently (quite recently as a matter of fact) I was emailed to ask if I'd like to re-register. I did, even though I stayed on this one, but within a fortnight some git complained about one of my sigs and I was banned again 'It takes all sorts to make a world young Cerb!' as my nanny used to say as she dandled me on her knee.

 

I think I know the one you're on about. Lol, several threads there, are mirrors of topics here.

I guess it all depends on how you choose to define trolling or where you draw the line between silliness and trolling. I enjoy to be "silly" at forums from time to time.

At a Swedish board, there is a real life crazy cat lady who always seems to care more about the lives of cats than those of humans, constantly attacking people who do not treat their cats like human babies. My intention was to provoke her, so i told I was leaving town for a few months and asked if it would be okay to leave the cat outside 'til I return - "afterall, it is what nature intended for them."

And oh my, did it work. She went on a full rant on how terrible and sad of a human I am, accused me of animal abuse and even threw a "do you ever get laid?"

Great fun.

Well that is pretty funny. I wouldn't consider that trolling, as much as a joke.

I think sometimes the troll/ing label IS tossed around a bit much though.


Besides, a bit of lighthearted trolling can really liven up a thread!

 

Yea I don't have a problem with that kind of trolling. It doesn't violate any rules or anything. It's the annoying trolls like the Haji trolls or Nazi trolls that are annoying

 

That must have been a horrific time for you. I can't even imagine the pain you and your wife went through. Just hearing your child is injured is enough to raise your parenting hackles but being wounded in combat..is a heart stopper. Hope all is well now and give him a hug for his service to the country.

 

Well, there would be a lot less traffic on forums like this one without the internet trolls.

 

Although I have to take care not to infringe the rules, I can usually find the right words to make them ignore me??
