Lets say the average gas station has ten pumps and the average speed per customer is 6 min.=
100 cars filled up per hr.
Same ten charging stations, average charge time of 1 hr = 10 cars charged up per hour.

And I would assert that many of them are caused by the inability of software to make instantaneous decisions in an ethical manner. They all rely on code delivered by humans. Do you really suppose that you would want to trust your life to a set of bug ridden code that you're the beta tester force for?

My brother in law and his brother have one. Family friend has one. I see them fairly regularly in my neighborhood and around town. As awesome as any Tesla is(cool to drive), until they can build one for less than $25k, they're not making a dent in any emissions numbers. In the end they're luxury vehicles and the 3 isn't cheap enough to go mainstream, even with the tax credit. By the time the tech catches up, Toyota and everyone else will have one ready to go that will actually make a difference. The tax credit on the S and X should already make people sick, as if wealthy people truly need a CREDIT to buy their toy?

dude the likelihood of me getting a new car anytime soon is the same as my likelihood of hitting the lottery. I'm just dreaming. I love the idea but but like that truck it isn't ready for prime time.

It is good for the country to invest in new technology. For example, do you think the free market created the electronics industry? Hell no! That was driven by the space program and military spending. All of those big names in electronics were funded by government money to develop weapons and defense technology.

Nine Government Investments That Made Us an Industrial Economic Leader
    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/william-lazonick/nine-government-investmen_b_954185.html

Tesla is doing highly innovative work. They are doing the cutting edge work for the industries of tomorrow. It is essential that the US fund companies like this. The Chinese are doing the same thing but to a far greater extent than we are. They are looking at the long game and will leave the US in the dust if we don't invest to compete.

Free markets do not favor innovation. The free market is for developed products. Innovation involves risk with no immediate reward, and long-term thinking.

I have developed many new products. There is no doubt that the US system is anti-innovation. It is all but impossible to protect your work. Patents are generally worthless. Fewer and fewer companies are willing to invest in true innovation because it is cheaper to steal it. Eventually this kills any chance of the US competing. We sure can't do it by the price of labor!

Innovation is the only card the US has to play.

You seem to have missed the point entirely (and intentionally).

100 years ago people were saying there would never be the infra structure to support the gasoline requirements of cars...
Obviously they were wrong then and they're wrong now

I also like hybrids. The batteries in them last a lot longer than the ones in pure EVs because they aren't being utilized 100% of the time unless its something like the Volt which uses electric first and only the gas engine if the battery runs low. Most hybrids use both at the same time though.

You are assuming there is no cap on how much power is pulled. There certainly will be a cap because the supercharging stations draw their power from the electric grid just like everything else so you can't pull more than the grid can handle. I suggest you spend a day or even a few hours at a truck stop and count how many trucks refuel at the same time and also the total number that go through ever hour and tell me that you can park trucks for several hours at a time without clogging up the system. Cities like Minneapolis are having problems with people not being able to find charging stations because people park their cars to charge and then run off to have lunch or something meaning they often don't get back till long after their car is charged.

I would make it a felony punishable with a minimum 10 year sentence and death penalty for second offenders to leave your car unattended while charging.

In summary my view on EV is that they are a toy and completely impractical. You want to save the environment get a Honda Civic like I did which does 30s per gallon and I am only getting 1 battery every 5 years.

The Volt is a plug in hybrid (actually, it's the first plug in hybrid). Plug ins are available from Ford, Toyota, Chrysler, Hyundai Kia and Volvo now.

I have 267000 miles on my Prius now and no sign of battery deterioration.

Great news for coal mines. They will have to dig a lot more coal to fire up the coal fired power plants.

The big problem with them is their recharge time. The just sit there charging and are not on the road.

Is your car on the road right now? What is it doing?

And, if you think that there is going to be a boom in construction of coal fired power plants, you're only fooling yourself.

The electric power industry is running away from coal as fast as it can, and will continue to do so.

I don't know whether the GOP Congress will go along with the Trump scam to subsidize coal and nuclear power, or not.
