Criminals, lunatics and terrorists are just the folks that will get a gun any way they can. These people aren't generally going to follow the law. Those who refuse to accept social responsibility are sociopaths. How many criminals, lunatics, terrorists and sociopaths do you suppose are armed and dangerous right now?

Gun owners generally use their guns responsibly and it is disgraceful to try to paint them all as irresponsible. In a situation like what happened in Colorado or any number of similar incidents your BEST line of defense is a GUN.

I'd guess it's because any area that restricts weapons in fact only restricts law abiding people from owning weapons. Obviously criminal types don't care about gun laws. So that leaves the law abiding populace helpless.

Where I live, breaking into occupied homes is rare. When it happens, it's almost always the result of some drug deal gone wrong. Otherwise, criminals don't want to risk breaking into occupied homes when so much of the population is armed.

That's not a concern in places like New York City or Chicago. Those are cities full of helpless victims.
