Its not a complete picture by any means, but Australia isnt paradise.
Gun related crime is lower in Australia, but overall crime seems to be worse in Australia.

So to answer your question, I would carry a gun in Australia.

Fully automatic machine guns are NOT generally legal to own. So-called 'assault rifles' (available to the typical user) are somewhat like semi-auto hunting rifles and shot-guns in the way they handle and fire ammo. 1-finger-pull, 1-shot unlike a fully automatic which will empty a magazine with just 1 finger-pull of the trigger.

This human debris in Colorado had a semi-auto rifle that jammed during the slaughter and I read it was speculated that he was trying to pull the trigger too fast and it jammed on him.

If there were armed folks in that theater they could have seized the opportunity to unload on the guy. Even with ballistic armor multiple shots would have incapacitated him long enough to either subdue or kill him.

Starting in the 1960's, a movement known as deinstitutionalization began, to empty out state mental hospitals in favor of local treatment centers. Well, the local treatment centers never arrived in the amount to handle the the people we kicked out of mental hospitals. So now the streets of American cities are filled with homeless people screaming to no one about transmitters in their brains. So crazy people have no where to go, and we used to identify crazy people a lot easier. Of course I'm guessing that this particular killer is crazy, rather than having some sort of agenda, but right now I'm going with crazy.

While I don't own any weapons of any sort, if I felt it necessary to defend myself outside of my home, then yes, I'd definitely be willing to carry a shotgun or rifle with me. I think anyone seeing you with a weapon of that sort, would think twice before attempting to harass you.

Other violent crimes in America are mostly from inner city violent criminals who mostly just shoot each other. Criminals who would still get guns, just like they still get drugs. Law abiding citizens would be left to fend for themselves against these criminals with slingshots. They also stay away from our houses because they don't know what's behind that door.

I've heard real experts say that taking that guy out would have been extremely difficult. And I'm a military marksman myself... I have little doubt from personal experience that he would have been VERY hard to take down (considering the situation).
