lol... well, all humor aside, I am not going to fight someone who may have a lethal weapon with something other than a suitable weapon.

I don't believe it would be legal for me to carry, so I guess the question is kind of beside the point.

    Good point.

Leffe, one thing to keep in mind is that concealed carry training covers a lot of facets of gun ownership.

It's dependent on the state, but I know that NC's program, for example, teaches you all about the legal limitations of gun use. In NC, any firing of a weapon to defend yourself must be documented and explained to the police.

For example, even though my state has Castle Doctrine, which allows you to use lethal force in defense of your home, you still have to spend some time with the police to explain what exactly went down. We don't take shootings lightly, and any concealed carry gun owner knows firsthand what he can and can't do legally.

If you've read my posts before, which I know you have, you know well I own no weapons of any sort.

Less concealable - and I agree to an extent but you Americans seem to a have gotten yourself into a "Catch 22" situation - and I am not sure how you are going to work your way out of it.

This is why I have actually changed my mind on gun control in the USA - I don't see it ever happening there to be honest. What I would like to see though is a ban on the bloody idiotic gun myths!! Because THOSE have spread via the internet and are infecting some of OUR people.

"Guns stop crime" - No, they do not but thanks to some well spread internet fertiliser everyone thinks they do
"guns are necessary for self defence" No they are not always - the Monash shooting was stopped by an unarmed bystander
"guns maintain freedom" Again no - we do alright without them
"guns will stop an invasion" again no, if Indonesia or China tried to invade Australia they would not only face a population that would invent new ways of causign trouble but they would find the same thing that the British Empire found with India - there are other ways to change a government

Then I wonder why you are touching on the subject or asking hypotheticals of which you do not know the answer.

Not really - think about it. If you could survive here without a gun - why can you not survive in the USA? And again I am not saying you are wrong - just want people to THINK about it is all

There are instances were people use a gun for self-defense and others were they do not. Those instances where they do not are not a suitable arguments against gun ownership.

Yes, I tend to agree. Those are bull(*)(*)(*)(*).

What Australia wants to believe or promote as policy is up to Australia.

I can agree that gun control seems to work in your country, but again, I think your country has a very different set of variables to work with than ours.

Either way, I'd much rather see America end the War on Drugs than mount a War on Guns.

Australia has a lot less crime and violence than America in general. That's not due to a lack of guns though.

Canada has proportionally more guns than America, but they have less crime.

It's really just a matter of circumstances. In a country with fewer crime issues, you can be safe without a weapon. In a country with more crime, not so much....

In fact I favor offering gun training in high school as an elective, and more training for the public. If more people are going to own guns a it looks inevitable that they will they should at least know how to use them. That way people learn the last thing you want to do is shoot before you know what you're shooting at, and if there is an opportunity to put down an active shooter anyone with a gun should be able to use it effectively enough to stand a chance.

I know I can survive without carrying a firearm.

I know I can survive without a great number of possessions..... Imagine a world with no possessions, I wonder if you can.

However, just because I can does not mean I should.

Because I have friends who own weapons and I've seen them fire them before. And the shotguns and rifles look pretty formidable to me.

That has nothing to do with it. It has to do with our incredibly massive and technologically advanced military that would never even give us the chance to use our guns because no one would make it to our soil.

That does not grant you knowledge to discuss the issue effectively.

If you do not know a lot about weapons, then its a good idea to avoid comparing them. At the ranges found in a movie theater, I would much rather go against someone wielding an AR-15 over a shotgun. A rifle requires shot placement. A shotgun? Not so much. Shotguns also generate more energy than an AR-15.

In Colorado I can use a 12ga. for hunting bears... and well, anything else.
In Colorado I can use an AR-15 to hunt coyotes (think 40lbs dogs)... and not anything larger. Not even deer.

When seconds count, help is minutes away. That is unless it's the military, which would be weeks or months.

How are law-abiding citizens suppost to defend themselves outside of their homes without handguns? Would you prefer we carried shotguns with us in public?

And what good would that do? If they obeyed laws, they wouldn't be criminals in the first place. This is where emotion overshadows reason in the anti-gun argument. When you disarm the law abiding public, the only people left with guns are the criminals. I have yet to see a sufficient argument that refutes this.

As for Mexico, their president already calls us racist for shipping their own illegal immigrants back to them. I don't see them being interested in working out any deals on border crossing.
