but does the teacher/student relationship trump that? Again, does it give an unfair advantage to the 18+ year olds over the 16 and 17 year olds? Personally, I find this story intriguing. Do I think she deserves jail time? Heck no. There are people here illegally who should be in jail before her. Do I think she should be fired and never allowed to teach again; you betcha.
There are lines teachers should not cross and in their position I think the age of the "student" is irrelevant. When I was in high school in the early 80's, these two friends of mine were banging this librarian. She wasn't in the school but the public liberry. According to them she was sort of retarded (I mean literally) and they would tell me of their exploits while we sat in study hall. I was invited to come along (so to speak) but declined. Not really my cup of tea, porking a mental midget for jollies.
No, the teacher/student angle is totally irrelevant. These were all adults. She didn't put a gun to their head.
Why should it? If you are 18, you can can be drafted and die in battle, you should be allowed to have sex with whomever you wish, as long as all parties involved are of legal consent.
You are absolutely right...there are lines teachers should not cross. This was one of them. Does it warrant being arrested? Hell no. Keep in mind there are lines the government should not cross. This was one of them...
I think the judge, jury, prosecutor involved in this case, and anyone who voted for this law should get 10 years in prison for being authoritarian (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)bags.
This goes both ways, if guys go into teaching, and they consensually bump 18 year old students, male or female, out of respect to homosexuals, it should be legal.
This. The answer is so simple, as it usually is. Anytime you corrupt an environment, you should be fired. Those kids obviously were gonna benefit from banging her, so she's gotta go. But jail time? Absurd.
So...From now on, even a 28-year old female aerobics instructor can't have sex with a 28-year old male student? Come on now. This is ridiculous. The fact that she might be a skank is beside the point. It ain't up to the justice system to invoke morality above their 'pay grade' which is to administer the law.
I think she should be banned from teaching for life, but they are adults, so I would not consider it a crime of 2-20 years, especially with the "victims" saying they are not "victims"
Probably. What she did was unethical. But she definitely shouldn't go to jail over it. Jail is for people that need to be separated from society. She just needs to spend more time at the 18+ clubs.
I thought this was a little draconian, seeing as the students were all consenting adults. Basically, the only reason she got a prison sentence at all is because she was a public employee, and they were subordinates. Ex, if a private school teacher had sex with several students who were all 18 or older, the worst that'd happen is that he/she would be fired - however because she was a public employee, she got a 5 year sentencs. There have been people found guilty of murder or molesting minors who've gotten lesser sentences. On a side note, her husband said he is upset because he feels she cheated on him - but according to him the couple engaged in group sex with other individuals regularly - so I'm not sure how he can call that "cheating" - so if your wife has sex with other men while you're in the same room with her, then it's okay - but if she does it while you aren't there, then it's "cheating"? That's strange.
The purpose is to prevent "favoritism" if a subordinate is in a relationship with their superior. It's the same reason why a military officer can't be in a relationship with an enlisted personnel. Most companies have some type of similar policy - ex. a supervisor can't be in a relationship with an hourly employee.
She just lived in the wrong state. Texas loves putting people in jail for stupid reasons. And they especially love telling you what you can and can't do with consenting adults in the privacy of your own home. I would never live in Texas.
I'm pretty sure the law in most states is that public school employees can't have relationships with their students whether they're consenting adults or not.
this is shocking liberals and conservatives are finding common ground on this. How much money and time was spent prosecuting the woman? Fire her butt, revoke her teaching creds and move on. Nope, instead the state now has to pay for her to be in jail instead of her working at WalMart or something and still paying taxes.
