Looks like you, @Bowerbird and @cd8ed don't believe in criminal justice reform, or even, the rehabilitation of people and their re-entering society! That's pretty wild!

I'm confused why he needs a pardon. He's been out for years after serving his time! What the hell?

Why don't you try and explain in detail how your " First Step Act " apllies to my post.

You seem to be under the impression that this pardon is the only criminal justice reform related move that Trump has made!

Can I assume that you believe that people shouldn't be sentenced to life in prison for every crime?

I believe we have too many people in prison and most things should be civil in nature (fines or other penalties outside of prison). Prison should be the last thing we do for only the very worst after all other means have been exhausted. Once you go in you shouldn’t get back out unless it is determined the system made an error.

There is a reason we have the largest prison population on the entire planet per capita.

What is pretty wild is that you think you have even a basic grasp of others viewpoints.

And the born again BS is as phony as it gets

    In general.
Sure, some may have a sudden epiphany but in my experience (which is purely anecdotal) people do not really change at their core — especially suddenly. Many of the people that claim to be born again Christian for instance (that I know) hold the same beliefs they always have, they just now justify it through cherrypicked Bible verses, this only does a great disservice to actual Christians following the word of God.

How do you define, "the very worst?" I assume that you have a list of crimes in mind and I can probably assume murder and rape are in that list, and I can probably assume that certain drug related crimes are not.

    For prison?
Only direct violations of another person causing or attempting to cause irreparable damage or failing to abide by the penalties of a lesser offense.
Virtually everything else can be handled either through fines, treatment or loss of other privileges.

    That really depends.
I do not believe the system needs to be blind to factors, only fair. If someone steals a loaf of bread from a supermarket then they should be made to repay that store plus a penalty. If they cannot do so they have the option of working to pay off their debt. If they refuse then yes.
If it is a major crime and the funds stolen has devastated families then yes — prison.

I also don’t think prison should exist as a place of rehab, rehab should be attempted prior to prison.
Prison is for the irredeemable. Basic necessities until they die.
Local jail could be for less serious individuals that need some time away from the general population. Short stays

We absolutely need to remove the profit motive from prison

That's an interesting take and one that I've never heard before. So to the subject of this thread - in your criminal justice system, does this man spend any time in prison?

What is the profit motive? You mean private prisons?

If he can provide restitution of 100% of the original, any punitive damages and whatever fines the state tacks on, then no. My policy is all about making the wronged people whole. In the instance of violent crimes, especially murder — this becomes impossible.

    Private prisons, yes.
