Bottom line is that people are scared of "assault rifles" because they look scary. Most people actually have no idea at all that in a close quarter environment you are better off if the bad guy had an M4 rather than a .22 pistol. Right now people are just emotionally driven by fear so they are lashing out. Very few will actually sit down and listen to someone like you or I explain to them how a hand gun is more deadly than a rifle in most situations like this.

FYI. The "wobble" theory of .22 caliber munitions was debunked a long time ago.

most people know better than to listen to people parroting nra misinformation

i don't know about the pistols, but the assualt rifles need to be rigidly controlled

at the 1:11 mark you can see how fast the bushmaster 223, like lanza's, can fire

this map shows the correlation between states with fewer gun control laws and more deaths from guns

As of 2007, 10.2 out of every 100,000 people were killed by firearms across the United States, but that rate varies dramatically from state to state. In Hawaii, at the low end, it was 2.6 per 100,000; in New York and New Jersey it was 5.0 and 5.2 respectively. At the high end, 21.7 out of every 100,000 residents of the District of Columbia were killed by guns, 20.2 in Louisiana, 18.5 in Mississippi, and 17.8 in Alaska. Arizona ranked eighth nationally, with 15.1 deaths per 100,000.

And what about gun control? As of July 29 of last year, Arizona became one of only three states that allows its citizens to carry concealed weapons without a permit. Might tighter gun control laws make a difference? Our analysis suggests that they do.

The map overlays [blue crosshatching] the map of firearm deaths above with gun control restrictions by state. It highlights states which have one of three gun control restrictions in place - assault weapons' bans, trigger locks, or safe storage requirements.

Firearm deaths are significantly lower in states with stricter gun control legislation. Though the sample sizes are small, we find substantial negative correlations between firearm deaths and states that ban assault weapons (-.45), require trigger locks (-.42), and mandate safe storage requirements for guns [-.48].

While the causes of individual acts of mass violence always differ, our analysis shows fatal gun violence is less likely to occur in richer states with more post-industrial knowledge economies, higher levels of college graduates, and tighter gun laws. Factors like drug use, stress levels, and mental illness are much less significant than might be assumed.

You'd be lying to them, that gun was in the perp's car according to the police.

I can also post a multitude of videos showing people firing hand guns at a rate so fast you would almost think it was a fully automatic UZI. Kind of a bad example seeing how its a movie but have you ever seen "The Expendables"? In the scene where Mr. Stallone was firing that handgun at mind blowing speed. All of that was actually done in real time, magazine change and all. The magazine was one of those quick load magazines though.

It really just depends on the person. Its actually easier to rapidly fire a pistol like that than it is a rifle due to hand positioning and a few other factors. In order to rapid fire a rifle the same way you can a pistol you need to "bump" fire it in most cases.

those excuses don't justify not controlling assault weapons like the bushmaster 223, lanza used

    1. Shooting sprees are not rare in the United States.

2. Eleven of the 20 worst mass shootings in the last 50 years took place in the United States.

3. Lots of guns don’t necessarily mean lots of shootings, as you can see in Israel and Switzerland.*

*Correction:(*)The info is out-of-date, if not completely wrong. Israel and Switzerland have tightened their gun laws substantially, and now pursue an entirely different approach than the United States.

    4. Of the 11 deadliest shootings in the US, five have happened from 2007 onward.

5. America is an unusually violent country. But we’re not as violent as we used to be.

6. The South is the most violent region in the United States.

7. Gun ownership in the United States is declining overall.

8. More guns tend to mean more homicide.

9. States with stricter gun control laws have fewer deaths from gun-related violence.

Last year, economist Richard Florida dove deep into the correlations between gun deaths and other kinds of social indicators. Some of what he found was, perhaps, unexpected: Higher populations, more stress, more immigrants, and more mental illness were not correlated with more deaths from gun violence. But one thing he found was, perhaps, perfectly predictable: States with tighter gun control laws appear to have fewer gun-related deaths. The disclaimer here is that correlation is not causation. But correlations can be suggestive:

10. Gun control, in general, has not been politically popular.

11. But particular policies to control guns often are.

12. Shootings don’t tend to substantially affect views on gun control.

What excuses? What you fail to realize, due to ignorance (not an insulting term) is that a handgun is actually MORE dangerous than an "assault" rifle in these types of incidents. Why aren't you up in arms about banning those? If you were seriously worried about people having "dangerous" weapons then you should be fighting to ban the most dangerous kind, am I right or wrong?

you're wrong, i'm not up i'm not arms about anything

assault rifles don't really have a defensive purpose, except in military combat

those weapons are built for aggressive, rapid-fire assaults that can kill lots of people very quickly

What was nothing? Is it because Bill Maher hasn't reported on it? Are you suggesting the police didn't pull someone from the woods in cuffs?

You asked for a source, I gave you a video. Here, here is another video; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YzCEAUUB20

    Another witness; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gl4oDghXLP0

There is footage of "really nothing" and another witness who saw "really nothing".

I can use any one of my assault rifles for defensive purposes if I needed to...

The fact is that a handgun is MORE destructive than an assault rifle in close quarters. So I will again ask why you are not fighting to ban something that is WORSE when you are so keen on saving lives?

What part of "The right to bear arms shall not be infringed" are you having a hard time understanding?

Watch this video, her testimony sums it up nicely while touching on the topics you don't seem to grasp.

it was nothing because he had nothing to do with the killings

what a joke, are you kidding me, you think there were two killers because a dispatcher who's giving a second-hand report said someone saw two shadows?

no, you wouldn't be allowed to carry them in most public situations

the assault rifle is a good place to start

Gun Laws Matter 2012: Understanding the Link Between Weak Laws and Gun Violence

We hear stories of gun violence every day. Domestic disputes turning deadly. Street crimes taking the lives of innocent people. Mass shootings wreaking havoc in our public spaces. Suicides and fatal accidents devastating families across the country. The unrelenting toll of America’s gun violence epidemic leaves 100,000 people injured or killed every year in communities nationwide.1 But while the number of people affected by this crisis is staggering – 86 people die by guns every single day – it’s almost equally shocking to find that legislators nationwide aren’t doing everything in their power to prevent the killings.

Plenty of widely supported policies can reduce gun violence, but, in many states, they aren’t being adopted.2 In fact, a number of states have chosen to pass measures that actually make it more difficult for law enforcement, doctors, and local officials to work to reduce gun deaths and injuries.

Require background checks on all firearm sales.

Prohibit the sale of assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines.

Require law enforcement to evaluate an applicant’s alleged need before issuing a concealed handgun license.

State gun laws are critical because our federal gun laws are extremely weak and leave enormous gaps. For example, 40% of all gun sales can be completed without background checks because federal law doesn’t require checks for firearm sales between private parties.3 Unless states step in and adopt their own smart laws, federal gaps like these allow guns to easily flow into the hands of criminals.

Top ten states with the the best and worst gun laws.

Gun laws, however, vary widely from state to state. Some states, like California, have adopted a broad variety of important laws to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands; many others, like Arizona and South Dakota, have adopted few or no good laws.
In our 2012 edition of Gun Laws Matter, we have ranked all fifty states based on 29 policy approaches to regulating firearms and ammunition.

    Moving Forward

The threat of gun violence does not have to be an inevitable fact of life in America. Because strong gun laws are clearly associated with lower rates of gun violence, legislators in every state should consider adopting a variety of smart policies that are widely supported by the American public. In every state, there is still much that can be done to prevent gun deaths, and many measures can have a positive impact well beyond a state’s borders. It’s not too late to prevent future tragedies.

Why would you want to START with the lesser of the two evils?

Firefighters don't fight a fire from the top down, you fight the base.

You are so keen on what you think will save lives so why don't you fight to ban the thing with the possibility to take even more lives? Why start with the type of firearm that is pretty much ranked at the very bottom of the list of weapons that could cause the most damage in a close quarter environment?

If he had an assalt rifle or an assalt type rifle has anyone questioned how he got it into the school without such a weapon being noticed?

he allegedly shot his way in

Adam Lanza shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School with a volley of rifle shots to a glass door before making a beeline for the classrooms of the youngest pupils, it emerged today.

Well not be to rude but it doesn't really matter what you "think". Statistical data, ballistics, and hard evidence prove that a pistol causes more destructive power at close ranger than a rifle. So yes it is the lesser of the two evils.

However, the AR-15 being discussed is no more "aggressive" or "rapid-fire" than a run of the mill 10-22 squirrel rifle and not issued for military combat.

Though I doubt you'll be swayed, you really should understand that it's hard to take you seriously when you continue to focus on what you and others have deemed the "scary" weapon.

    Fear clouds judgement.

it's you that shouldn't be taken seriously

lanza killed 26 people in a matter of minutes with an assault weapon

those kinds of weapons have no valid justification for being legally available to a civilian

First point, you don't know what he used and how much, he also had two semi-auto handguns with him and there are some reports the rifle was in the car.

Second point, people use them all the time for hunting and target shooting. They are not military weapons. There are over 1.2 million of them in circulation and only a few have ever been used for crime.

Well, even pistols can be used to devastating effect, but certainly keeping loaded assault rifles out of people's homes would be a good start.
