This claim has been disproved many times in these forums.

Who was President when Ellis Island opened in 1892 to process immigrants to the USA? Oh yes, Benjamin Harrison, a Republican...a conservative facilitating and encouraging immigration? Unthinkable!

When the PPP is included yes it is, our dollar goes much further than their Euro because of places like Walmart where I can buy twice the goods at half the price than anywhere in western Europe not to mention the fact that my sales tax is not astronimcal.

Just look where Norway (the country with the highest Per Capita GDP) sits on the global big mac index:

    http://www.economist.com/content/big-mac-index

Well that's a lie, the tax rates in Europe are so high that it is nearly impossible to run your own business.

YES - thanks for the offer - I'll find your calculation - of the odds being killed by hooligans at a soccer game in England - most interesting , (wink)

Cigarettes /tobacco etc. is by and large self-inflicted - I would'nt think the numbers of victims of secondary smoking illness is anywhere as high as gun accidents Besides AFAIK smoking bans are increasing - hoping to reduce this accursed addiction .

As you appear to be someone who love maths + stats here are some more relliable sources + charts - .

Gun crime statistics by US state: latest data

How high is gun crime across the US - and which states have the worst figures? This is the latest data

How bad is gun crime in the US? The latest data from the FBI's uniform crime reports provides a fascinating picture of the use of firearms in crimes across America.

The US has the highest gun ownership rate in the world - there are 89 guns for every 100 Americans, compared to 6 in England and Wales.

And the murder figures themselves are astounding for Brits used to around 550 murders per year. In 2011 - the latest year for which detailed statistics are available - there were 12,664 murders in the US. Of those, 8,583 were caused by firearms.

The FBI crime statistics are based on reports to FBI bureau and local law enforcement. The figures are not complete - there are no stats for Florida or Alabama on firearm murders. But even so it provides a detailed picture of attacks by state.

Once Engels was on a train travelling into Manchester, and he was saying, rightly, what a dreadful dump it was. A businessman from that place listened, tolerantly, and when the train came into the station, got up and said, 'And yet, Sir, a great deal of money is to be made here'. That, ultimately, is all the merchants of death and their supporters seem able to say about the child-killing bang-bangs in the 'States. It hardly seem enough for sensible people, I'd have thought.

Hmmmm . Interesting but not true : Like you a certain Mr Ben Swan - Reality Check - lifted his data wholesale from a story in the Daily Mail, without checking it–something you might expect a fact checker to have done.) I find the Daily Mail report was rightly debunked in America.

when you see statistics that look unbelievable, you probably shouldn’t believe them, at least until you dig deeper into the data. Based on these figures, it appears that Britain is over 4 times more violent than the US, and since this is all he gives you, that is exactly what he leads his viewers to believe.

What Mr Swann + Daily Mail readers either don’t know, or simply don’t bother to tell his viewers, is that the definitions for “violent crime” are very different in the US and Britain, and the methodologies of the two statistics he cites are also different
    ----

    extract :

"First, it should be noted that the figures Swann gives are out of date: in 2010, according to the FBI, the reported rate of violent crime in the US was 403 incidents per 100,000 people–the 466 figure comes from 2007. Second, and more importantly, the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports defines a “violent crime” as one of four specific offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

The British Home Office, by contrast, has a substantially different definition of violent crime. The British definition includes all “crimes against the person,” including simple assaults, all robberies, and all “sexual offenses,” as opposed to the FBI, which only counts aggravated assaults and “forcible rapes.”
When you look at how this changes the meaning of “violent crime,” it becomes clear how misleading it is to compare rates of violent crime in the US and the UK. You’re simply comparing two different sets of crimes. In 2009/10, for instance (annual data is from September to September), British police recorded 871,712 crimes against persons, 54,509 sexual offenses, and 75,101 robberies in England and Wales. Based on the 2010 population of 55.6 million, this gives a staggeringly high violent crime rate of 1,797 offenses per 100,00 people.

But of the 871,000 crimes against the person, less than half (401,000) involved any actual injury. The remainder were mostly crimes like simple assault without injury, harassment, “possession of an article with a blade or point,” and causing “public fear, alarm, or distress.”

And of the 54,000 sexual offenses, only a quarter (15,000) were rapes. This makes it abundantly clear that the naive comparison of crime rates either wildly overstates the amount of violence in the UK or wildly understates it in the US.

Due to fundamental differences in how crime is recorded and categorized, it’s impossible to compute exactly what the British violent crime rate would be if it were calculated the way the FBI does it.
    ----

However , what I hoped to put across in the OP was that US authorities + US Media has been so focused on the the two Boston Marathon bombs - paying very little attention for the West texas disaster or America's high firearms crime rates .

Go read the post #114 - + note the differences in how crime is recorded and categorized.

While a punch up in a Pub would be reported here as a "violent crime " similar incidences would'nt reach yr local Sherif's attention., untill he made sure he was'nt about to confront Rambo .

A disturbing number of Americans even write in a violent context.

PF is a great example of that. Most times, I can guess the nationality by how aggressive and pugnacious the content is.
