People will still be violent. The old, weak, and peaceful will be at the mercy of the strong and violent. That is not a society that I would want to live in. The medieval age, before guns were invented, were NOT a peaceful time. The murder rate was several times the current U.S. rate.

I am a senior citizen and I carry a gun, legally, to enable me to fight off criminal attack if it happens.

Amen to that! I am a young women who legally carries for safety.
No, I am not some crazy nut who hides from things. I realize that as a woman I cannot physically defend myself from an attacker who is any amount stronger than I am. I don't want an attacker to get close enough for me to have to use pepper spray, and I am not trained in knife combat.
I travel on interstates a lot, I spend a lot of time at farms that are well away from towns, and I live in a city whose violent crime index is a 1 on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the safest). So I choose to carry. I carry for my life and the lives of others.
In my state, as long as I am following the law I cannot get tried or sued for using my weapon in self defense. Also in my state you are allowed to use deadly force to stop any violent crime.

Yeah my gun is meant to kill, but it's meant to kill those who have knowingly given up their right not to be shot. I don't ever want to have to use my weapon, and I pray I never have to draw or shoot it at someone. But I am prepared for the day I do.

This nation would be a safer place to live.

I do not carry a gun because I am affraid.
I carry a gun so I do not have to live in fear.

My wife has her concealed permit also. In fact we got the permits due to a job she used to have. She has twice used her gun, but both times no shots fired. The would be attacker suddenly remembered urgent business elsewhere.

Amazingly as the scourge of America, the firearm isn't anywhere NEAR the top as a leading cause of death. Almost twice as many people die from Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. Does this mean we should ban Teddy's alcohol? Then add the number of vehicle accident deaths that are alcohol related. More people die from a slip and fall! You stand a 50 times greater chance of dying by heart attack than by gun....but they carp on the gun deaths? More folks die from a simple fall then being attacked by someone with a firearm.

Good point. You have laid out a terrific argument not to own guns........ There appears to be no NEED!

I wonder how we all got the impression that our collective doors will imminently be kicked in and attacked by gun-toting criminals, and how we should all be protected by guns ourselves. Oh, the irony!

Hey Danct.....If you can. Or if your allowed. Do yourself a favor.
    Go purchase yourself a gun.
Get yourself familiar with it. If need too, take a firearm lesson.....Learn how to use it.
Stop being such an argumentive intellect, with all the jib-jabbing with folk that are gun owners or shooting enthusiest.
Owning a gun is not going to destroy you, nor change your eating or grooming habits. It will make you feel safer in todays wicked evil world.

If by some unfortunate circumstance you cannot own a firearm.....too bad fella.
Just dont envie those millions upon millions of decent folk that do.

My name is Jake, and I'm a responsable gun owner.

My personal view on the issue of "assualt rifles" and "high capacity magizines" is as follows.

Your claim that 'they're only for killing people' is imprecise. A gas chamber or electric chair is designed for killing people, and these devices obviously serve different functions than guns. To be precise, a high-capacity, military-type rifle or handgun is designed for conflict. When I need to protect myself and my freedom, I want the most reliable, most durable, highest-capacity weapon possible.

The founders of this great nation fought for our rights, they used the "assault weapons" of their time. The rebel army that over threw the british government where nothing but farmers and blacksmiths, they fought with the best weaponry of the time. They where able to fight off the largest standing army in the world, and they knew that some day the citizens of our great nation of may once again be forced to fight for their freedom, that is why they insured that the average citizen would be able to own military style small arms.

I know what your thinking, "In 1776, citizens had muskets. No one ever envisioned these deadly AK-47s. I suppose you think we should all have Atomic bombs."

Well actualy, the Founders discussed this very issue--it's in the Federalist Papers. They wanted the citizens to have the same guns as were the issue weapons of soldiers in a modern infantry. Soldiers in 1776 each had muskets, but not the large field pieces that fired exploding shells. In 2011, soldiers are each individually issued M16s, M249s, etc. but not atomic bombs. Furthermore, according to your logic, the laws governing free speech and freedom of the press are only valid for newspapers whose presses are hand-operated and use fixed type. After all, no one in 1776 foresaw offset printing or electricity, let alone TV, satellite transmission, FAXes, and the Internet."

Mexico has stricter gun laws than the U.S., you can own a rifle/handgun no larger than .22 caliber and it can not be of "military caliber". all sales go through 1 shop in mexico city, and need to be ok'ed bo the gov't.

Does mexico have fewer murders than the US?
I look foreward to your response.
    Jake

Can you EVER actually address an argument? I pointed out an inconsistency in the other member's argument. Do you wish to address this?

    Unbelievable!

    Welcome to the forum, Jake.

I'm glad you feel safer with an assault weapon. It's a free country and you have every right.

I AM puzzled, however why you seem to be arguing for a right you already have?

PS,........ You can't honestly be comparing our murder rates with Mexico to make an argument as to gun rights....... Are you? Should I do the same with respect to Japan, and how much closer would we REALLY be to gleaning anything meaningful?

I'll equally be looking forward to your response.

..and as a necessary tool to defend freedom. Point being, the deaths attributed to its use is as justified as the automobile, more so in fact.

The need, right and freedom to own and bear arms trumps your desire to feel "safe".

You are very accurate in your views. And I agree with you. There are those ignorant anti-gun lobyiest that will argue your views/opinons.
Do like I do....I just encourage them to drive in their vehicles as often as possible.

When guns are criminal, only the criminals will have guns.

Besides, the US is the world's number #1 weapons exporter. Do you honestly think our economy can do without the revenue?

We banned guns in Australia many years ago. Have our gun related deaths decreased as a per capita %? Ummm.. Gee not really! WTF? Airsoft plastic pellet guns are banned here as are BB guns. These are TOYS in many other countries as well as the USA. Replica firearms are also now banned.

It ain't the guns you have it's the wackjobs who have them that are shooting each other. Take them away from civilians and only the criminals still have them. Kinda like the war on drugs. A total farce.

The ONLY thing I'm envious of in the USA. Gun ownership is still legal. We all had to voluntarily surrender our firearms under amnesty or face a felony possession conviction! But BB guns and airsofts? Are you serious?????

I REALLY enjoyed target shooting and I live in the country not a big city. GRRRRRRR. Have a few shots for me Joe!!!!!

    And hopefully always will be.
It's really hard to break the skin, much less kill someone with an airsoft gun. Bruising yes, but sheesh.
    Will do. Thanks.
