To find out why Christians feel like they can ignore certain verses while still claiming to live their life by the book, which many claim is perfect due to divine origin.

Nobody lives by old testament law , not even Jews.

Jesus fulfilled the law at his crucifixion.

Gee, that would explain why so many people are getting murdered everyday. It would also explain why there are no decent men and women in the world, because they are all out looking for a quick toss in the hay even though they are married. Yeppir,,, just look at the condition of the world and it can be easily seen that "nobody lives by the old testament law".

    Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

•When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
•I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
•I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
•Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
•I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
•A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
•Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
•Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?
•I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
•My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev.24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted disciple and adoring fan,

    J. Kent Ashcraft

How can you tell the difference between commands that were only meant to be followed then vs. long standing commands that should always be followed?

I disagree. This verse as well as the attitude the bible has towards women in the rest of the book has lead me to believe that the writers of the bible treated women as objects that should be owned by men. In my mind, this passage supports that idea.

Since we can't agree on the meaning of this, but you have provided a somewhat reasonable explanation for your view, I'll just drop this one and move on.

There are plenty of other passages that I can use to help prove my point.

1: Is knowing whether or not you are allowed to remarry after divorce is of minor importance?
2: If you are going to condemn an act as a sin against god, don't you think you should clarify what is to be condemned?
3: Though, this actually is of little importance to me, it is of great importance to those that believe. I'm just trying to figure out how you justify ignoring 1 passage to follow another when 2 passages contradict each other.

Whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery. -- Matthew 5:32

But like I said, it isn't uniform throughout the book.

Would you like a list of the hundreds of thousands who have ignored that law?

He falsely believed end times were near. Just like he falsely believed a lot of other things. So, since end times were near, that changes the rules laid out by other people in the bible?

Deuteronomy (13:6-10) says you should kill non-believers.

2 Corinthians (6:14-17) says not to marry a non believer.
Of course, 1 Corinthians (7:12-13) says it is ok.

John calls them the anti christ (2 John 1:7) and says they are without god(2 John 1:9).

So why are believers married to non-believers? As for the contradictory bible verses, how do you know which one is the word of god?

In one spot, but not the other. Matthew 19:6 says not to divorce (What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.)

Followed closely by "A man can divorce a woman if she is unfaithful" with no mention of a woman being able to initiate a divorce.

Because it is very obvious to see in the world around you. For an example of christians ignoring the laws on marriage, I suggest looking at televangelist Paula White.

Televangelist Juanita Bynum divorced her husband because he beat the crap out of her. There isn't a bible verse that says that is allowed. Under no circumstances do I think she was wrong for doing so, I just think that was unchristian of her.

Which others laws would you like me to provide an example of christians ignoring?

The Levites wrote the old testament laws 800 years after the death of Moses.

As we have agreed in the past about certain metaphorical stories and the Book of Genesis, including the "Laws" given by Moses, you still basically have shredded the rest of the OT, including the prophets, Ruth, etc. as well.

And now in this thread, you are shredding the NT by discrediting the works of Jesus Christ, including miraculous healings as well as casting out demons.

FYI, in my 30+ year Christian walk, I have had 2 friends, who I knew very well, taken to prayer meetings of believers, who have manifested in demonic voices and actions when confronted with the Name of Jesus! These ppl were 'normal' and showed no signs of psychiatric problems, other than having compulsions that they could not control. Thus, that is why they asked for prayer, which ended up being more of an exorcism (no, not the green vomit type) with outrageous manifestations as previously mentioned.

My 5 YO daughter also received a healing as have I in the past, but agreed they were not routine nor explainable---oh, yeah, the secularists would say 'mind over matter.' The body does have the ability to heal itself to some extent, but exactly 'what is the mechanism?' Most believers believe that "ALL healing" comes from God; whether it be knowledge & skill, medicine, natural plants, or the miraculous. That is why 'real' believers shud not avoid doctors or natural foods that aid in supporting & maintaining their health.

I dont believe that all physical maladies are spiritual, altho some may be caused by and manifested in physical (such as one's spiritual condition, stress, etc.), but some 'oppression' & definitely 'possession' are related.

But you, Margot, have thrown the baby out with the bath water,' and have reduced Jesus to a radical rebel who had good aspirations, a Svengali who had mind control over ppl & situations, but is now dead.

You shred the NT (BTW what is your explanations for the 'water into wine,' oh yeah, another 'story' by well-meaning followers of His), and have a faithless excuses for all the miraculous wonders that He produced during His lifetime. The shortest scripture in the scriptures, "Jesus wept,' meant what?--Jesus was unstable, psychotic, a weak emotionally uncontrollable man?!

Exactly what do YOU base YOUR faith on, Margot?! Reasons & man's explanations/excuses?! Will YOU deny the miraculous things that have happened in my family's life as mentioned?! Or, just call me a liar?!

You last quote above shows YOU to be a hypocrite---Jesus was crucified..and for what?!!

I would like to know exactly what YOU believe in to make YOU as YOU profess to be, "a Christian?" Just in the philosophy of a 'good man?!" And is that why you revere Mohammed, also?

Demonic possession? You're joking. The Book of Ruth is a parable.

According to your statement that "The bible doesn't say that", yes, I kinda did think you weren't aware that it did. Why would you say "the Bible doesn't command us stoning our kids" when it very clearly does.

Now, if you had said the NT doesn't command us stoning our kids, you might have a point. Excepting for the fact that Jesus himself repeats this law in Mark 7:5-10.

The Pharisees criticize Jesus for not washing his hands, so he criticizes them for not killing their disobedient children according to the Commandment "He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death." (Exodus 21:15, Leviticus 20:9, Deuteronomy.21:18-21).

In contradiction to your quote, I again point out that Deuteronomy says to kill non believers (jesus agrees in Mark 7) and 2 Corinthians says to shun them.

As for the love your neighbor, don't love them too much. Jesus commands you not to in Matthew 10:37. He is actually saying you should love him more than your parents.

Demonic possession???? That's how disease and mental illness were explained to illiterate primitives. What's the point in that sort of acting out in this day and age?

Concerning the Book of Ruth .. Rabbi Zeirah said: "This scroll contains neither laws of purity or impurity, neither what is permitted or forbidden. Why was it written? To teach the reward of those who deal kindly with others .

The gospel (Everyone's salvation) isn't as important to me as my family, either.

Also, everyone's salvation doesn't hinge upon my actions, even by the ridiculous standards of the bible. Though, Jesus did say most people would go to hell, I don't think it was because of me. I'm not the one who made the gate straight or the way narrow. (mathew 7:14, see also "I saw the light" by Hank Williams, Sr.)

And so my 30+ years experiences are all illusions? That sounds like a judgement of the religious Pharisees of that time. Better just call me a liar and get on with it....still a very sad ending for a supposed life-long follower of Christ..you have nothing to base your faith on but blind hope..at best you're a Deist or a Calvanist, for you gave no encouragement to even a new Christian such as DBM...because you grew up around 'dead religion' and have felt nothing like He (nor I and many of others that I have known or come across with like experiences). You are dry & stale in your futile, carnal thinking..[IMG]

That's it?! You have a self-satisfying explanation for everything that you write off, huh?

Go about your folly, for true believers will see past you...I'm done in humoring you anymore..

    Prospect's nutshell:

    "Matthew 22:36-40

Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

This is the first and great commandment.

And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."
    http://www.politicalforum.com/religion/228424-bible-verses-christians-ignore-13.html#post1060773938

The Koran claims to be "perfect due to divine origin," men wrote the Christian New Testament, none of it was ever said to be reveiled. We can accept that men may not write down everything right.

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (John 14:26)

That does not say that everything that was written down was written right. If the Holy Spirit has abandoned us, then all we would have is the law.

If "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," then it figures that the words of a man could not meet the glory of God's words; a man would have to be perfect to perfectly write a law, and there logically would be no need for a Golden Rule or even for a Holy Ghost if those laws of man were perfect.

"In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true."
    http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John 8:17&version=KJV

Taken in context of what happened do we have to accept that law, do we not know that is not true? Are we not men?

“Not to go on all-fours; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to suck up Drink; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to eat Fish or Flesh; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to claw the Bark of Trees; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to chase other Men; that is the Law. Are we not Men?”
    http://www.bartleby.com/1001/12.html

Those who live their life by any book are living their life by man, not by guidance from God.

Many Christians don't get involved in demonic possession. It does seem to show up among sects that are always talking about being Spirit filled... and they expect re-occurence.

Assemblies of God, United Pentecostal Church, Church of the Nazarene, Wesleyan Church...

No one objects to your belief.. but note your rudeness towards others.

Which leads us back to the OP.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

    From Galatians.

Why is this ignored by the vast majority of Christians, certainly on these boards? Why is Christian behavior not personified by this fundamental teaching from Paul?
This is a perfect example of scripture that is ignored by Christians.

Good post.. Two absolutely different views.

What I was trying to explain is that churches who say "spirit-filled" every breath also purport to believe in speaking in tongues and demonic possession.

The irony on these boards is you are often villified, called an atheist and muslim, but you do a far better job of remaining civil in your discourse with people than the fundamentally "devout" Christians who can frequently be abusive and dismissive and plain rude to others.
I have named no names, so if you don't want to out yourself, don't respond to this post rudely.
But you who are guilty of this will not be able to stop yourselves for long. Your true nature will win out, and you will be abusive again, and interestingly, Paul is saying that is evidence that the Holy Spirit is not with you.
But I'm sure this scripture is simply wrong, right?
    Or will simply be ignored.

The fruit of the Spirit should look like love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. ...

Can a 'professing Christian' be demon-possessed?

These are the ones who 'honor God with their lips, but their hearts are far from Him' (Mat 15:8).

    Pot calls kettle black again.

Pot tells Christians one standard of judgement for them, and another for our atheist who is not really an atheist friend here. (But for some reason this standard does not apply to him).

BB, is there any reason you are again coming in with the sanctimonious attitude and fruit of the spirit attack? Is there some reason you think you can call others to task but not yourself be called to task - that this is rude and violates the spirit of love?

Once again BB, a lack of accountability is not love. Indeed, Jesus will forcefully remove money changers from the temple and loudly admonish the Pharisee's when they commit the unpardonable sin.

Yet, even when this is repeatedly pointed out to you, you insist on brow beating everyone with one part of the Bible and the systematically ignore the parts of the Bible that your bullish behavior ignores - while accusing others of ignoring the one part of the Bible that you think should equate to your behavior.

Worse, I very much respect Margot, indeed I have defended her many times. But I have also witnessed her lash out, like any other human being - and yet here you do not chastize her for violating the fruit of the spirit?

Its funny, the Bible warns us about hypocrotical judgement, but that too would be something you ignore. Indeed it seems that there is a great deal that you ignore, and I for one am not fooled in the least by double standards.

I do appreciate the implied dig though, that anyone who disagrees with your assesment is automatically rude and violating their faith ... because you say so.

Anyone who cares about standards and accountability is not going to walk past thought unchallenged.

    A long but unresponsive post.
Why is this ignored? That is the topic of the thread. I will stipulate that I am not an exemplar of the Fruits. How does that address that you, too, give it no weight and choose to ignore it?
Has the Holy Spirit passed us both by?
