Capitalism is always going to be more responsive as it works toward the ONE objective that capitalism understands - maximizing near term profit.

In you shoe example, capitalism could not give a crap about shoes - it just wants people to buy them. All other issues are irrelevant to the shoe company - pollution, quality, fairness (such as driving out competitors to gain monopoly and other strategies), etc.

But, when the factors that motivate capitalism are absent, capitalism is totally at sea. It has no answers at all.

So is the state or civil society better at giving karate lessons?

I'd point out that you are right that "civil society" doesn't include government.

BUT, "civil society" also excludes markets and capitalism.

So should the government or civil society produce our shoes? I'm not quite sure of your answer.

OK, ignoring you misunderstanding of civil society, again ...

Karate lessons are a product that has all the characteristics that entice capitalism. Nobody cares whether anyone actually learns Karate. There exist people who are willing to pay for such a product. Etc. The fact that the company doesn't care even a tiny little bit whether anyone actually learns Karate is NOT a down side. They are just interested in maximizing profit - so providing enough "Karate" for people to pay and like is plenty good enough. Getting the kids out of the house may be worth it, meaning those who purchase Karate may have no real basis for evaluating the product quality. And, civil society has no reason to care.

Yes - I know where you're going, and you aren't going to like it.

So who should produce cell phones? Regular people or the government?

    You are headed NOWHERE.

Surely you know that by now. I've given you plenty of clues for you to get it.

That simple question was another duplicate of a question you've asked several times.

You have had zero to say about my answers.

    Please do not play dumb.

I'm not playing. The government should govern, not operate schools or blacksmith shops or cafes.

I know that's what you think.

And, you are right about blacksmith shops and cafes - more stuff you mention that are very well addressed by capitalism.

Quizzing people about nonsense is not a good debate strategy. If you are unable to illustrate your point, you should shhhhhh.

If you're hear for the cheap shots and fake points, by all means, carry on. I'll point out however, that you stink at that game, and your points are zilch, so, perhaps it's time for you to try something else.

    Scary...

Equally scary, and I post this as a public service warning to all forum readers, President Cheat-o is resuming his Daily Corona Virus Briefing and Comedy Hours today, @ 5pm if I heard correctly.

As the bomb expert said in Die Hard 3, "Be somewhere else"

What about them? They are in far less danger than the nurses and supermarket employees.

Major announcement from a major school system today, Loudoun County VA, where my senior attends..

Earlier in the month, we had to vote for our preference, 100% at home in the fall or a 2 day in/3 day out Hybrid plan.

We voted hybrid, although not without some reservation. Apparently 38% of the county did the same.

However, LCPS has just announced they will be full 100% at home in the fall, with the hybrid plan being phased in, assuming starting in spring.

I imagine Fairfax County has either done the same or will do so shortly.

Edit - Ah, I was right... plus Montgomery county in Maryland.

While that may be true, we are discussing the risks that adult employees within the school system face by opening schools during a pandemic that doesn't seem to be losing speed. So, it's not a question of "Which one has it worse?" It's a question of "How do we address the issue of education in the traditional setting and mitigate this situation to not contribute to the problem?"

Sorry your vote didn't pass. I can certainly understand how frustrating that can be.

Not so much in higher grades, but I imagine parents of younger ones are really juggling day care, work and essentially homeschooling their children from Ground Zero.

Do you feel more parents voted for the 100% plan solely because that's what's more familiar and fits around the schedule that works for them? Change is hard. It's even harder when nobody seems to have a decent playbook.

By allowing parents to make a choice between school and on-line lessons which of course is what is proposed.

Oh... LOL... I didn't remotely care that I wasn't in the majority here... we're totally fine with remote learning in the fall, although my kid would probably be more focused physically in school.

We voted for the hybrid plan, always knowing that if anything came up, they'd close everything up and we'd be at home anyway.

I can't imagine anybody voted for 100% remote learning because it fits anybody's schedule.... I imagine it was primarily based on fear and uncertainty...

So, schools would have to accommodate both options and be up and running in about a month or so. That will be no small feat.

Agreed. I also believe that it is the reason this question exists. People are afraid and uncertain of what the best options are because this is unprecedented in our life time. We simply don't have any playbook on how to do this and it doesn't seem that any other country has it completely figured out either. Maybe things will be different when the next pandemic hits, but we are flying by the seat of our pants with this one. Yikes.

The schools are not worth reopening.
All education funding should be redistributed to the parents and guardians of children.
Better alternatives to the current failed obsolete system will be created instantly.
