Some of the newly elected Republican governors are nixing the mask mandate like South Dakota Kristi Noem in South Dakota. Who is a staunch Trump supporter.

Oops. I was trying to make the point about statistics and low numbers, should have spotted that.

    Check your maths.
10 in every 1000 is one percent not 0.01% as you wrote.

Yep. Just seen this on the news. I thought they had said 1 in a 1,000. I have ADHD so my mind heard to more normal statistic of
    1 in xxx.
So the point I was making is.
1% to 1.3% does not sound as scary as a 30% increase.
I think stating a 30% increase while accurate, is scaremongering.

    That was my first reaction.
It's a lot when you are talking about the difference between 1000 or 1300 deaths per day though.
Truth and Justice is right to point out that it is 30% more deadly.

1 in a 1000 is 0.1% not 0.01% :) . (we've all wrote those sort of mistakes when in a rush). A 30% increase is significant though if true

No we weren't talking about the difference between 1000 and 1300 deaths per day.
The stat was that for every 1,000 people who became ill, 10 died

So if 10 people died before then 13 people died now. It only becomes 1000 and 1300 if 100,000 people fell ill.
It can be 13 in every 1,000 or 1300 people in every 100,000 who fall ill
Either way its 1.3% of people who become ill with covid.

I was trying to say that we are losing about a thousand a day right now so if the strain is 30% more deadly we could lose an extra three hundred.

Ahh got you. But I think the current higher numbers are the result of the new strain, so they already include the 30%.
Anyway the figures are very speculative at the moment, they are extrapolated from various other bits of data rather that actual numbers.
The presumptions are that the new strain is 70% more infective, that the numbers with the new strain have leapfrogged to old one and the death rate has climbed.
However its to early to say if the new strain is picking off certain people and the numbers will fall after the initial rise.
Hopefully the vaccine roll out will remove the vulnerable before the virus gets them. :fingerscrossed:

The UK mutation might be 30% deadlier killing 1 in 10 who catch it rather than 1 in 14 though more study is needed to verify this claim made by Boris Johnson.

The State of California have lifted stay-at-home restrictions. It may look like they'll be getting some freedom long awaited.

Brazil's handling of the coronavirus pandemic has been ranked the world's worst, while New Zealand topped the class, according to research published by a leading Australian think tank on Thursday.
You have to wonder where the USA stands.
