Are you able to imagine any political arrangement other than what we have now, and which does not fill you with images of totalitarianism?
Good. But see, above, when I mentioned the defensible case that had been made for a constitutional monarchy, you leaped to ... Better boring than the (R)adical "fun" of installing an unelected dictator like Trump and taking away basic civil liberties such as abortion. I don't want to make a leap myself and accuse anyone of TDS, but it's hard. Some see only two possible worlds: one with Trump in it, and one without. Is that a photo of Trump you use as an avatar?
I was simply referring to what happened in 2020 and the reality of today's Republican Party. It's more than a few nuts.
Express it as a percentage: the number of nuts who present a real danger to the Republic divided by the total number of Republicans. What's the quotient?
What about those who serve in Congress? Or maybe we should just post snipers all around the Capitol building, for added protection. What message would that send, about American democracy: alive & well?
Ha, ha. Cute. I had meant, don't you think that those who serve in Congress-- after all, we want to appeal to the best possible candidates, don't we?-- deserve the assurance that all steps are being taken to prevent a repeat of anything at all, resembling January sixth? If so, how can you not see the refusal of most Republicans to participate in the J6 Committee, and so many of them, portraying it as unnecessary, and a sham (in fact announcing plans to investigate the investigation, obviously in an attempt to discredit it), as a betrayal of this responsibility to protect the members of that institution? It is essentially saying that any who are not in Congress, to bend to the will of the the most dangerous of the civilian mob, will be serving the country, at their own risk.
I don't share your view. The committee conducted a show trial complete with professional production values and a high dollar producer. The Republicans didn't see the need for all that, and neither did I.
Except Republicans were OFFERED EQUAL SAY ON EVERYTHING, and McCarthy turned it DOWN! Because 2 possible people of interest in the investigation, Jim Jordan & the other guy, were not allowed (obviously) to sit on that investigative Committee, is a bullshit reason why-- out of 200 other members-- no one else could suffice! I mean, it is a laughably ridiculous pretext! Republicans simply did not WANT to investigate, because they knew-- and McCarthy, especially-- that it would lead to Trump. So your complaints about "production values" ring rather hollow, in my ears.
That's the theory. Historically speaking, that's not worked out for more than a generation or two in real life.
You're right. It never seems to. Look at the difference between how many Great Kings you have vs. how many Great Leaders produced by Democracy in a given time. American preeminence in the world is largely due to a succession of Presidents which any country would regard as truly exceptional individuals
I would not regard the idea that American preeminence is largely due to US Presidents as valid. We've gotten lucky a few times and unlucky a few times, but at least there is a larger pool to draw from than in a monarchy.
Our record gives us about 5 really world class Greats every century. I'll stack that against any nation's royals any day.
Maybe, but the part of your post I was disagreeing with was your claim that American preeminence in the world is largely due to it's Presidents.
I heard that in (some) German states (Bavaria?) "Reichsbuergers" were banned from owning and using firearms, even if they are hunters or members of a shooting club. This indicates how dangerous they are considered to be. The threat isn't over yet. And unfortunately, comrade Pooteen is still alive. Open in Go
It's the environment that produces them, that's true, and it's not just politics. America compared with any other nation is literally replete with exceptional individuals in all field of endeavor and achievement. Democracy and diversity coupled with freedom have made us what we are and I am very opposed to the idea that we now should turn our backs on them.
Okay. Look, I don't worship Republicans. They may well make the Biden laptop the centerpiece of a months long televised inquisition. I wish they would not, for the same reason I wish Watergate and the Jan. 6 disturbance had not been sensationalized. It's embarrassing. To me, these committees are just politicians who like to make pompous speeches for attention and their own advancement. There should be efficient and serious investigations, of course, but not show trials.
