I am talking about the economic realities of London. Not Britain.

Well for Christians and Jews it means Dhimmitude and second class citizenship, and for non-monotheists it means conversion or death.

If I am ever forced to wait in line and then denied service due to religious reasons I will sue the ever living (*)(*)(*)(*) out of the store in question.

So what happens if someone from Westboro Baptist is working checkout - does he put up a sign saying that if you look gay, please find another aisle? "I respectfully ask that no one wearing a rainbow shirt come to my aisle!"

Or maybe a member of the Nation of Islam? "'I'm sorry, no whites in this line; please find another!"

How about if one of our Stormfront Posters works there as a cashier while not screaming about Zionism online? "Is that a bagel? Sir, you eat like an Israeli - over to aisle 7 for you!"

Yeah, what could POSSIBLY go wrong!

A simple solution would be to 1) NOT hire anyone unwilling to do the job as required or 2) Ask the butcher to label all pork as beef. Now the booze is another issue.

Your final solution is beyond simple, it's bordering moronic. Would not hiring include Christians who don't want to work Sunday shifts? That's part of the same store policy. Incidentally, ASDA (part of the Walmart family) have jumped to M&S defence claiming their policy is the same.

    Why is that moronic?
If you're Christian and don't want to work sundays, apply for a job where you don't have to.
If you're Muslim and don't want to handle alcohol and pork, don't apply at a store that sells the stuff.

So started by Jews and Jews worked there since the late 19th century, but this new regulation is just starting now w/ the increase of a certain demographic?

It almost seems a bit obvious that the rule for Jews was byproduct and secondary consideration for the one for Muslims.

It would be quite illogical not to include Jews when the story came out about Muslims.

Now, if you could show that Jews have been exempted from handling pork and shell-fish well before this week, you would probably have a point on Jewish accommodation.

This is good news - I'm vegetarian and rarely buy alcohol so I will be choosing the queue for the till manned by a Muslim as it will be the shortest :)

Just been to Waitrose and walked out because the queues are horrendous - I'll try again later

I've had to wait for a cashier who was over 21 to sell me alcohol before.

Why is this a big deal again?

Don't like a store that accomodates employees' religious beliefs, don't shop there.

I believe that M&S found a simpler solution--they are just going to strive to put those people in positions where they do not have to handle food/booze sales.

When I shop at Waitrose for wine and approach a cashier who is under 21 (the majority of cashiers in the store), the said transaction is handled by a supervisor or other older member of staff who deals with the transaction directly. This non-issue is one that could be handled similarly to other scenarios on the basis of religious grounds for example. This ain't rocket science yet the media are making a song and dance about a problem that ought not to be one.

Sure, I'd add that to my little list.
Actually I think it's cool that M&S cares for the religious belief of their co-workers. I'm all for that.
But somebody who doesn't want to touch pork & alcohol (which is news to me, I thought Muslims were just not allowed to consume it) clearly doesn't have the necessary requirements to do that job.
It's like somebody who can't see blood is applying for a job as a paramedic.

Is there no longer any unemployment in UK? Why not hire just people who can conform to a job description? I mean, this is what job description is there in the first place, is it not, to weed out these who can't perform? Or moslems now considered to be handicapped and thus exempt from certain duties?

This store doesn't require their Jewish employees to handle pork or shellfish.

None of which has anything to do with how a grocery store chain conducts business. Since no law compelled them to make a business decision like that.....who's business is it anyway?

Are there any Jews working at M&S who're making stink about handling pork? Don't think so...
