Really... don't get me started on current college education costs and how Obama doles out his grants and loans.....

Our neuvo poor white 3.79 GPA kids get nothing and get to go to work at the Gap while 2.1 GPA minorities go to Harvard for free on the tax dollars we paid while working at the only minimum wage jobs our 55+ year old bodies can get as greeters at Walmart after early/forced retirements.

Right now... I can't see many things to point out to my kids about why our country is great...?

Maybe they could grow a pair and do it themselves like I did instead of blaming others?

Judging from the pitiful state of our liberal/union administered public education system, I'm inclined to say you're projecting.

First, girls don't have testicles... probably news to a guy of your sexual preference? Not that there is anything wrong with that. :)

Second, I guess they could sell their foreheads as advertising and raise the money like you did, but jeez... what kind of company would hire them with Bubba ink on their face?

Third, they already both work as many hours as they can outside of school and sports... which has now grown to be a year round training workload.

The factor which is most harming to them is that we make too much money according to Obama without regard to our debt, monthly tax payments and economic obama reality right now.... jeez, if I could afford $18K a year in tuition for my daughter, we'd own something a bit better than a 1999 Buick and we'd have paid our 2010 real estate taxes(not even thinking about our owed 2011 taxes still owed too).

Best chance for my kids is for us to divorce, and for them to move out on their own somewhere to live for a year so they can then go on food stamps and be their own govt entity under Obamas rules.
They have to be ghetto before they can collect ghetto I guess?

Guess that is tough (*)(*)(*)(*) for you then. I didn't have any parents to help me out so I did it on my own so I didn't get to mooch off of my parents. I did it on my own and if they can't then that is their problem.

This thread is so unbelievably stupid.

Its surprising ANYONE learns ANYTHING with the anal retentive idiocy the Right brings to education.

Fortunately, humans tend to learn at least a LITTLE regardless of how miserable all the people who think each step in an educational process need to be PERFECTLy "in order" to be of any value!

Reading is to be ENJOYED! Storytelling and creativity is to be encouraged!

Kids have enjoyed storytelling to their dolls, to their pets, sheep, GI Joe, rows of toy soldiers. If dogs will sit and appear to listen, there would be NOTHING BETTER than to have kids read to dogs!

Except, of course, maybe to their attentive parents who would let them read for FUN rather than PERFECTION once in a while, but sadly that pretty much doesn't happen.

I'd have offered to help you in non-monetary ways if I knew you back when. I built tennis courts, carrying 5 gal buckets of asphalt and sand emulsion all day after we already did the course and then fine hot asphalt 4 inch layers with regard to hot raking and then rolling the court base... and more. I am still waiting for my arms to go cancerous with the coal tar crap which burnt my skin daily over a period of 6 years or so...
And, when I got to college, I had to work 20 hours a week or more as a bartender to support staying there.

So... no, my kids don't expect any free ride nor not having to work to go to college... but, in a time when I can't freakin make more than 25K in a year with my experience and corporate success, how can they make enough to pay what Obama expects them to pay each year... which is $18K... argh.

I appreciate your hard work. Sounds like you have done the right things in life by taking care of your family. Obama doesn't dictate school tuition though.

    Hehe.. true story.
My daughter is a senior in HS and is currently in a Honors English course. She has been feverishly working on Shakespeare and his works, most recently on Macbeth. Her analysis has been at a much higher level than anything I would have done or even thought way back when I was in HS. She seems in misery when I catch her reading and working on her Shakespeare stuff.
That said, she has been feverishly reading some ragety book for the last few days and I just could not stop her from doing so. Ended up recording her favorite TV shows and even worried about her socially when she didn't go to the Tues night BB game with her GFs.
Tonight.... I found out whats what.
She was just reading a book which she got interested in reading.... and today she went on and on and on with describing enthusiastically the entire book... which sounded like greek to meeee.

I haven't read any of these books but now I guess I must do so quickly.... and then I saw on Letterman there was a babe who was starring in a movie of the same name as her book... although now in my old age, I just can't remember it..... eek.

I am white, and government is paying for a large portion of my graduate school!! You need to invent a new victimhood narrative, because this one doesn't work!!

PS. I am hardly alone in my program either!!

I don't know about this whole "victimhood narrative" but he does have a point. When I enrolled in college I got the best scholarship they had to offer. It covered tuition, books, and left me with some cash to do with as a I pleased. The GPA requirements for that same scholarship for an "African-American" student was a full .5 lower than it was for me and the ACT score requirement was a full 4 points lower. This is absurd since I went to the same high school as many of those "African-Americans". In fact, I was in the minority at my school.

Now, of course I can't say that I was a "victim" since I received the scholarship but there is no doubt that somebody got the short end of the stick simply for the color of their skin. It would be easy for me to tell that somebody to just suck it up but that would be pretty low of me since I wasn't the one that got shafted.

Great.. so I guess when we are dead and my kids are 27 like you, they too can get great Obama grants. Right now though, even though we make alot less monthly than our monthly bills, we are considered too wealthy to get help for our white kids to go to college.

Our best route to follow for our kids is to just declare bankrupcy(sp).... or to push them out and let them declare themselves as being independents after living for a year in their own solitude poverty?

Yep... hopefully it is a better read than some of those werewolf/vampire stuff..... almost sounded to me akin to one of my favs... Kings the Stand.. with a alot of those bad movies where the characters had to kill each other to survive?

I got some hope when she said she needs to find the next book in the series....

I think that series is a little more high-minded than the Twilight nonsense, so it's good that she's reading it. Too bad she doesn't like Shakespeare, though. I'm a big fan of his, in case you hadn't noticed...:)

Hey... she is too young for you.. I think. She seems to understand the native writing of Macbeth and sometimes disagrees with others interpretation of the writing based on the previous character nodes... but I have no idea what that means. Sorry.

And, although she might be mentioning her new book on facebook, I doubt she'd say anything about Macbeth.

Meh, I thought it was a cute story. What disturbed me at first was that I misread the title of the thread. I read, "Children Read to Dongs." That would certainly be liberalism going amok. And I wouldn't put it past them either.

I'd like to hear these same proponents argue as to why we still need Teachers in schools grading tests in light of this kind of statement.

I'm surprised that this story didn't come from California or Massachusetts.

I have never in my life heard of a racial scholarship requirement being advertised!! In fact, most scholarships don't give set requirements. They give basic guidelines, with the understanding that certain elements may not meet the exact requirement, but exceptional abilities in certain areas can make up for that fact. So I doubt the fact that you know, that minorities had lower requirements, unless you are much older than me, and things have changed dramatically.

PS. The largest grant I have, is basically for learning Arabic. There is 0 racial or gendered requirement, and there are I think 7 of us in my program who have similar grants who are white.

You can call me a liar if you want, I know what I saw. Those exact numbers may not be exactly right since it was a while ago and those are the best guesstimates that I recall, but there were definitely one set of requirements for African-Americans and another set for everyone else. It was 1997 at the Univ. of Memphis and the exact GPA and ACT requirements were spelled out in black and white (in more ways than one in this case). I don't know if they are still doing it that way but that was certainly how it was done when I attended.

Breitbart continually reaches for the ultimate pettiness, and RWers put all their focus on the mundane of issues.

When I was 8 - 10 yrs old, we had a family dog, I probably would have enjoyed it. BTW, the goal here is reading, the audience isn't the issue.
