Wow...I totally agree with this statement. They should also allow AP Senior and Junior, high school students to teach after school programs in the Middle and Elementery Schools as a jump off into the teaching profession. Then, they should get school districts to recruit college student to teach high school after school from 3-5PM. There are tens of thousands of people that would do it for free in my state with promises that they will get a leg-up over their competition when the apply for a job in the future.

All schools should require 120 hours of community service and internships to graduate: EMS, Food pantries, social services, police stations, autoshops, etc.

Its the only aspect of socialism I absolutely adore. Affordable life experience.

    More so than most.

My first job was pushing a lawn more when I was twelve. At 14 got a job working at the drugstore down the street. On the side me and a couple of buddies did the floors at the doctor offices next door.

There is nothing worng with young people working and the existing laws ARE stupid in how they prevent such a learning experience.

I think the key is that it is a parent's right to let their kid work part time if they so choose.

Anyway, I don't think what Gingrich said was enough to merit a harsh response.

This actually makes a lot of sense. I tend to agree, child labor laws as currently written are quite stupid. Way to go Newt!

    Child labor laws ARE stupid.

It's good for kids to have a summer job.

You realize paying someone 10 years old to baby sit is probably illegal in your state?

Working and earning a paycheck will teach kids that money isn't an endless resource that only requires begging parents for it. Liberal parents are basically doing the same thing with the Government, so they can't provide an example of responsibility. Kids will have to learn it by other ways. Obviously it's a lesson that has escaped you, thus far.

    .....

It didn't take Gingrich long to say something stupid...what he was implying was that kids should be allowed to plow fields, plant crops and be legally allowed to be slaves..as they are in third world countries. His projection was merely a new slant on children in poverty.

When I was in school, I also worked for a old widow who loved planting her garden with the PS that I would play basketball, and softball games, then I would send my sister.(giving her a portion of the money) After I got home, I would go next door to help my neighbor bathe and feed her twin babies. (If I was late, my sister would take my place and I would give her a portion of the money) Then it was home for dinner, clean up, homework, and bed. On weekends it was babysitting Fri. Sat. and Sun. for different people. And I loved the evenings that I could stake the whole famiy (8) to milk shakes or sundaes.

I learned high finance, fair distribution of profits, how to designate needed responsibility to others, and how to save money. I became a banker for my two brothers who borrowed from me, with interest, and I was a business tycoon as a freshman in high school. My school years were an education within an education ....

parent saying no could accomplish the same thing without them missing math class to clean (*)(*)(*)(*)

as always the rights answer is for the schools to do what they will not

Heh, look at the OWS crowd. Most of those menchildren have never held a job in their life. You can't brainwash the twenty somethings into progressivism if they have any clue at all how the real world works.

Kindly show where Gingrich mentioned children being forced to work. Thanks.

Oh, you said implying. So you know what Gingrich meant to say, but didn't. Quite the talent you've got there.

You're basically setting up strawman arguments because you can't argue the facts, here. Nowhere in the article does it mention kids "missing" class to work. Typical liberal strategy of evading reality.

They want a lot of money for doing nothing. I don't know how society got bad enough to give people such a sense of entitlement. That's what the nanny state will do.

Class is already over, the kids work for a few hours, and then go home. Nothing wrong with that. You libs simply don't like work.

I agree.. I didn't want mine working a six hour shift at Taco Bell after school and homework and sports activities all day..

But I find Newt's position offensive.. you don't do away with child labor laws because the US economy is being screwed over by crony capitalism and failed economic policies.

Gingrich is a trickster .. given to extreme statements which will change next month.

If you are stupid enough to elect a Republican President like Gingrich, you deserve everything you are going to get....

There are only Two elements remaining that stand between the average American and serfdom:

    1. There is as yet no property ownership qualification for voting.

    2. Debt cannot automatically be passed from parent to child.

And your guns? Here is a hint, look up the terms "Franc - Tireur" and "Oradour Sur Glane" . The Germans showed how to deal with uppity locals 1870.

Get rid of the unionized janitors and stick in a bunch of kids that may or may not be protected without those stupid child labor laws. Unemployment solved.
