    N. Korea sent a ballistic missile at 6:06 local time over the island of Hokkaido and dropped 1180 km from the coast of Japan. In total, the North Korean missile flew 2,700 km. It set off sirens, and the Japanese people were told to take cover. So does this mean a war between Japan and China? I don't think so, but Kim is getting brazen.

Funny how the Pentagon is assessing it, but how the Greek news has already assessed it? :confuse:

North Korea has fired a missile that flew over Japan, the Pentagon confirmed.

"We assess North Korea conducted a missile launch within the last 90 minutes," Col. Rob Manning, the director of press operations at the Department of Defense, said Monday evening in a statement. "We can confirm that the missile launch by North Korea flew over Japan. We are in the process of assessing this launch.

The U.S. needs to get within 10 miles of NK and send a missile a few hundred feet over Pyongyang.

It's that kind of approach by the US that made this mess in the first place. What they should do is follow the Russian and Chinese plan to demilitarize the area so Kim can get rid of his nukes.

NK will never get rid of its nukes no matter what the U.S., Russia, or China does.

Kim was very agreeable with Russia's plan on how he could get rid of his nukes and still feel secure. Russia would be N. Korea's protector, and considering how close N. Korea is to Vladisvostok, he knows the last thing Moscow would want is for the US to enter N. Korea.

China and Germany back the plan and I'm sure others as well, but let's face it, the American missiles aren't in S. Korea because Washington sees Kim as a threat. They're there for the same reason they are in Eastern Europe, to surround Russia and in this case, China too.

Not the S. Korean army, but the American missiles and the 15 American bases.

Why would Russia want to protect NK? It's the most evil regime on the planet. The people have no rights or freedoms. One bad word against the government and the whole family is off to a concentration camp. A third of the people eat tree bark because there's no food. Kim assasinates people as he pleases. It's hell on earth.

I am always amazed at the armchair generals who will call for action with a callous disregard of the risk of precipitating mass casualties, in this case in the hundreds of thousands, including US soldiers but also the populations of South Korean cities. Life is cheap when you can sit in front of your TV shouting "yee hah!" as your testosterone flows! If only these guys would get out a bit and get a girlfriend. Or a cold shower.

Real generals take risks based on complex calculations, weighing up risk and assessing strategic and tactical objectives, fully aware that there are human lives on the line.

This smacks of anti-Americanism. The USA and indeed many of its allies can hit Russia and China from anywhere in the world. In Korea we have a massive build up of conventional forces which would probably cause millions of deaths without any nuclear weapons being fired. The USA is there to defend its Korean ally. The USA is also a protector of Japan which is constitutionally prevented from having nuclear weapons (as it is the protector of Germany in Europe). Of course having influence in Korea and Japan is in the interests of the USA. Democracy is the best guarantee of global peace and prosperity. All other systems have failed.

China and Russia on the other hand have enabled this barbarous NK dictatorship over the years, as it serves as a buffer between them and the USA in the region. I think Trump is right to put this together with trade. If we have a slowly liberalising China and Russia, along with a NK which is going in the same direction economically (like Vietnam for example which is still pretty communist but is a US ally now), why would this destabilise anything? This would enhance global trade and through mutual dependence, enhance peace and security. A Korean Deng Xiao Peng would be the obvious solution.

My problem is not with the strategy which is smart, but with the temperament of the POTUS in the face of provocation from Kim..

The US and SK have been conducting military exercises using hundreds of thousands of troops every year less than 1 mile from NK and are currently doing so

N.Korea is the funniest country on earth. In addition to its missile tests that focus on reaching US. They also have a main television program that shows some bird,
    [IMG]
    and has haircut laws,

Kim is not very agreeable to anything. Kim also understands that anytime a dictator disarms and expects any superpower to protect him, that dictator
    usually ends up dead.

If the Russians & Chinese don't like the fact that U.S. missiles are in South Korea, that's too bad.

Will see how our president handles this issue. I'm sure everything will just be peachy. ;)

Would you rather POTUS ignore this threat and hand it over to the next one ? there is a price for that too.

That is true. The US only attacks defensless countries and NK knows that it would be suicide to give up it's weapons.

No President has ignored the threat but no President has found a solution. Trump is no different. So far talks and makes promises he can't keep but the NK program continues and even accelerates.

OH, most certainly not. The POTUS will have to address it. He has no choice.
That could be a good thing or a bad thing.
Experience level & temperament come into play here.
Would you want the surgeon doing your kidney transplant to be experienced or inexperienced?
Level headed & logical or somewhat bat chit crazy? ;)

Good question, I guess it comes back to the question how urgent is the "transplant"...., Obama was level headed even thou I think he made many mistakes in the ME - at least he came with a good will, wasnt his fault the Arab spring erupted at his watch, I wont blame Trump for Kim either, no easy solution there.

NK must stop sending missiles over our allies. We need to do anything to accomplish that. If that means upsetting the fat man, so be it.

And if that upsets the Neville Chamberlains of this world, I'm ok with that.
