Yes, and the Ridigers were good friends of Rosenbergs.

But some foolish people still think that Alfred Rosenberg, who was born in the Russian Empire and studied in Sankt Petersburg, really believed that Slavs (Russians) were "subhuman" and that he wanted to exterminate them.

Guess who invented these hateful legends about the Baltic Germans, who were the architects of the Russian Empire? Cui bono?

Just think, why should somebody, whose ancestors spent all their lives to make from a backward Asiatic country the greatest European Empire, hate the Russian people?

They loved Russia and Russians, because that was their country!

But they hated Bolsheviks, because these bastards destroyed what they had loved!

I disagree. I think it is objectively obvious.

Certainly we have a higher GDP than any other nation. Certainly we have the most powerful military. And we definitely have the best technology overall, both commercial and military. There are other nations that might come close in one of those areas, but none that come close in all of them.

Exactly...we only know the situation as of right now. As of right now, everything above is true.

That is why our ascent is so remarkable. Look at how short a time it has taken us to reach this apex.

But we are still here. There is no guarantee that what happened to them will happen to us. There is a first time for everything.

Rome was never a global power the way that the US is a global power. Not economically, and not militarily. There is no comparison IMO...they toddled where we stride.

Even Russia is far superior to the Roman empire. The variables are not the same. That is why they are not analogous to us.

Rome was not a world power? Justify your statement!
Rome owned a 2 / 3 of the world, known civilization at that time! Rome has all the attributes of a world power!

Rome was not a world power. North and South America and Japan and Australia are part of the world. They did not have a clue about Rome. That = no world power.

If there are significant parts of the world that dont know you exist, that means you're not a global power.

Not even close. They didnt own any of the Americas, most of Africa, and most of asia. That is a lot less than 2.3 of the world.

There were other civilizations at that time.

    Like who? Source?

I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of successful Americans were born here, not in Europe.

Known to Rome only. Persia, India, China, African civilizations were around long before and Germania and Russia were civilized, too.

1207 Genghis Khan is declared as the great khan of all Mongols.
1250 Mongols have the global empire which extend from Europe to China.
    1260 Western Uluses become independent.
1300 the Mongol Empire include Mongolia and China only.
    1368 Mongols lost Beijing.
Next 20 years, Mongols lost China completely.
Since the end of XIV -century Mongolia is unimportant, poor Asian country.
Do I need to give you other examples of rapid rise and rapid fall?

I do not want to prove to you that the U.S. will disappear. I'm just telling you about the irony of history. Where is the guarantee that you are the exception?

You are absolutely wrong! Rome was the global empire of the ancient world. Just the world had other sizes in those days. It was a world without both Americas, Australia, Antarctica, northern Eurasia and southern Africa. Imagine a hypothetical super power which includes the U.S., Canada, Europe, Russia, North Africa and Middle East. That would be a superpower of the same scale as the Rome for modern world.
Rome had enormous influence on next human history, culture and science. Rome left a huge inheritance. People are still studying Latin language though noone speaks this language. Builders are still using construction techniques invented by Romans. Architects are still copied Roman architecture. People still read books written in Rome. The whole modern world jurisprudence is based on Roman laws. And so on. U.S.A. is far from this position

Europe and China are not "global". That empire did not extend to the Americas. Or Australia. Or most of Africa.

Do you understand what "global" means?

Only if they are actually analogous to America. So far I have not seen any.

America is not like previous empires. That is my point. Thats why history is not relevant in this context. There has never been anything like us before, therefore there is no common frame of reference.

There are no guarantees for anything. All we know for sure is that all of those empires failed, but we are still here. Their fate is known....ours is not.

Please post your evidence that Rome held power of any kind over Japan or China or Australia, or South America or North America.

Those places are all part of the globe. If Rome held no power of any kind over them, how can you call them a global empire. They were a regional empire.

Modern day Russia has far more power and influence and wealth than Rome ever did.

No, the world was the exact same size. The Earth has not shrunk over the years.

Do they teach geography and geology in Russia?

Um...no both Americas, Australia, Antarctica, northern Eurasia and southern Africa all existed back then. And had people living on them.

And none of that would have been possible without the discovery of how to make fire by ancient cavemen...do the Romans owe their success to those cavemen? Gimme a break.

Everyone sees only what he wants to see. I like seeing de-industrialization of the U.S. economy, growing public debt, coupled with the physical inability to pay the fine, irrational spending.

So what's different about the U.S.? In my opinion it is ALWAYS the same, adjusted for technological progress.

They did not have this effect only because these countries have not been opened (for them). Within the boundaries of the known world their power were incredibly high. In fact, they simply control all the territory known to them.

For the Romans it was smaller. Do they know what is a "subjective opinion" in US?

    Yes.

    Look who's talking, heh heh

We have the highest GDP of any nation that has ever existed. We are a democracy (previous empires were not). We are not united by a common race or religion, but rather by a common ideology.

Well, then how could they be "global empires"?

Within the boundaries of my house my power is really high too. BFD.

Why are you trying to handicap them? In a direct comparison, they lose.

No, it was the exact same size. They simply did not have as much influence over it as we do.

The Russian education system misinformed you. The Earth has not changed size since the time of the Romans.

My opinion is not subjective in this case...it is objectively obvious that the Romans were not a Global Empire.

Romans never managed to conquer Germania. Germans like to think, it's because Germanic people were such good warriors. Probably the Romans were simply not interested enough.

The Germans of that time were good warriors. But if Rome really wanted Germany, they could probably have taken it. They had better technology and far greater resources.

But you're right...they didnt want it bad enough to devote such massive resources into taking it IMO.

Rome was not a lightweight for their time...but they were far from a Global power. They dominated an area the size of a single continent at best. Modern day Russia is superior to Rome in every way. So is China and the US.

Yes, I'm talking about. Why does this surprise you?

I will not go into details on "this GDP lacked a real basis" thread. Anyway.
    And so on?

So what? Democracy is just one of many forms of government. BTW, Rome was a democratic state at the beginning.

This is a feature of any empire. You should read up about what constitutes "the empire".

Counter-question. What makes the U.S. a "global empire"? Which countries are under the United States' control? Excepting Iraq and Japan there are none of them.

    1) Hardly. Your home - it's not your state.
    2) Your house is much inferior in size to the Roman Empire.

    Only adjusted for technological development.

They do not know about the existence of other countries. They completely controlled all the territory that they have been known.

The American education system misinformed you. You can not control, what you have not discovered yet. No, really, do not pretend to be stupid, you know what I am talking about.

There are none of "global empires" these days too.

Its an expression. It means that what you are saying applies to you also, and in an ironic way.

Details are not necessary for objective facts.

You asked me how America is different from empire in the past. So I answered you.

Not by modern standards. Rome had slaves.

Not in this context. Previous empires have been based around a single race or religion. The vast majority of Roman citizens (for example) were ethnically Italian (white). They may have RULED over non-Italians, but their own citizens were Italian. So yeah, they had a common race.

Is that a tacit admission that you do not consider Rome to be a Global Empire?

1 - Military: Our ability to project military power to any part of the globe, and our ability to destroy any nation on the planet via nukes.

2 - Economic: The fact that our economy affects all other economies...if the Ukraine collapsed tomorrow, America's economy would be fine. If America's collapsed tomorrow, a lot of other economies would be in turmoil and Chaos. The current economic crisis is actually evidence of America's economic influence.

Neither of these things was true of the Romans. You could argue that China or Russia are Global powers...but not Rome.

Control isnt necessary to be a Global power. But the US probably directly controls more landmass than Rome did.

    Rome:

    US:

    US: 1

    Rome: 0

The US does not control Iraq or Japan. They both have sovereign democratic governments that do not answer to the US.

That is handicapping them. If you need to "adjust" in order for them to compare to us, then that means they dont compare to us.

"If grandma had balls, she'd be grandpa". I was told that is a Russian saying, and it is very appropriate here.

    So what?

About the size of the Earth since Roman times? Please post your evidence that the Earth was smaller during the time of the Roman Empire.

Americans are poor bastards who are brainwashed by the Israel Lobby. They are used as stupid cannon fodder to fight wars that are not in the interests of the USA.

Their social structure is collapsing, they are rapidly transforming into a Third World Country.

BTW, I do not believe that you are an American.

You are a Russian that tries to parrot a dense American, but you overreach, and that gives you away.

My arguments are equally valid whether or not you think I am American.

Of course, you could always just ask the Mods to trace my IP if you want to know for sure...

Um...who exactly gets to determine what is in our interests if not us?

Okay. Most part of your GDP is unbased.

It is some sort of "we have got vacuum cleaner" difference.

Why are you judging Rome by modern standards? Actually everyone had slaves these days.

You should read up on "What is an empire?" thread. "Empire" is a multi-ethnic state, claiming to be a united nation and aiming to achieve the maximum possible power.

(*)(*)(*)(*).....your anglo-saxon white population dominated over no-white population just about 40 years ago....how can you judge Rome?!!!!

This is a tactful remark that the global empire in my opinion does not exist and have never existed.

    1)"Only adjusted for technological development."
2)There are a couple of such countries right now, not just USA.

1)You are judging ancient empire in a modern style.....again.
2)There are a couple of such countries right now, not just USA.

You are judging ancient empire in a modern style.....again. They could not influence what were not discovered yet. Is it so hard to understand?
Rome were a global empire in it's own point of view.

1)You are judging ancient empire in a modern style.....again. This is conditioned by technical progress.

Mongol Empire, British Empire were bigger then US and Russia is, proud to say, nearly twice bigger then US. So what is your point? :)

There are still occupying US armies in Iraq, Germany and Japan. They are not "sovereign".

It would be funny if some Zimbabwean would be comparing his country with cavemen, proving his superiority with a straight face .... but when a U.S. citizen, in whose country racial segregation continued until the 70-th condemn Rome for slavery at a time when everyone practiced it .... this is just ridiculous.

....They could not influence what were not discovered yet.

It is just waste of my time. What is your point of pretending to be stupid?

Why wouldnt I? You asked me how we are different from them and I answered you.

I agree. They were inferior cultures. That doesnt mean we cant judge them by our standards.

...typically dominated by a mono-ethnic elite. How many exceptions can you name?

Because this isnt 40 years ago. Thats how.

    More handicapping.

The excuses are irrelevant. They were not our equals. And they were not a global power.

Same thing with the economic issue.

So what? How does that change what I have said even if true?

Same thing with the economic issue.

    So what?

Its own point of view is irrelevant in this context. we are discussing from OUR point of view...not Rome's.

So what? Even if that is true everything I said about Rome is still correct.

The fact that it has 1/10th of our GDP is probably not something you are quite as proud of.

If we are there with the consent of a democratically elected government, it is not an occupying force IMO. Are we occupying Germany as well?

How are they not sovereign? Give me an example.

Therefore they were not a global power. The reasons for this are irrelevant.

This word, as well as in the Russian language has several meanings. In this case I mean the vast, ubiquitous, comprehensive.

Every country, every empire has its own specifics. But the laws of historical development are equivalent for everybody.

Earth had the same size, but human civilization had other size. Do they teach history in the U.S.?

As well as the modern world including the United States owes its success to Rome.

In this context, it means "the globe"...meaning the whole Earth.

If your empire does not influence the whole globe, it is not a global empire. The Roman Empire (at its height) only had about 2/3 the landmass of the US, and the US does not even cover a full continent.

And have been re-written many times. There is a first time for everything.

Which civilization? Rome was not the only one of its time. It wasnt even the first one.

Thats how I know that Roman did not cover the globe...history class.

Ok Herr Professor of English Philology. If you do not like the word global let's use phrases - the most powerful, all-powerful at that time. This does not change anything. History knows many examples of the collapse of the great powers, and does not know a single example of the eternal existence of anything. The large size and power is not a guarantee against decay. There is a Russian saying - "The bigger the cupboard, the louder it falls".

You are trying to drown me in fine details. This is an unsuccessful occupation. I dont believe that the teaching of history in the U.S. is so bad that you even do not know that the size of human civilization 2000 years ago was another. Do not tell me about the new technologies and a strong army. All great powers are rotting from the inside including Rome, the Soviet Union, Egypt and so on. Rome also had advanced technology for that time. This did not stop the barbarians to conquer it. Give me an example of something eternal.

After two thousand years, somebody will say .... if your empire has no effect on the galaxy or universe, it is not global empire. Even after two thousand years, humanity will not be able to get rid of eccentrics. ))) No offense.
