Marine, normally I can agree with certain parts of your commentary, but on this one I think you are a bit off.

I would equate this to the ignorance is bliss concept. Crooks, liars and thieves of all types prefer their victims to be ignorant of reality. The less informed the masses are, the easier they are to take advantage of.

There's a good deal of crooked behavior going on with how the rich are buying elections, trying to redistrict states so that the majority no longer counts, and other shenanigans. I think we need to be more aware of where the Rich are stashing their sometimes ill gotten gains and apply the law where applicable.

For example, how many Bankers committed fraud during the banking debacle and went to jail in this country? How many people are being prosecuted daily for downloading a song or two to the fullest extent of the law because the Recording Industry pays millions into a legal fund that will hound you forever? They even attempt to use blanket subpoenas so that they don't have to use due diligence in identifying who really was breaking the law. Fortunately most courts throw those cases out.

As far as what they rich do in their own homes, if they want to buy gold plated doilies for the end tables? I could care less. Do they want to spend their money on a lavish home that could house 100's for people for 2 to live in? So what, it doesn't affect me so I don't care.

It's when the rich use those pent up millions of dollars to buy our political system that I get bent over.

Why are the wealthiest not paying wartime Tax rates during times of alleged, real war?

Most of 'em have already left the country except to maintain a minimum balance checking accout. A few maintain residency because of the superior golf courses. But, hey, if they ain't doing ME any good, I don't care where they go.

I guess then you mean that we have to do it by lowering wages and reducing standard of living.

In my opinion, any denial or disparagement of our privileges and immunities should require wartime tax rates on the wealthiest, merely to ensure the necessity and propriety of any public policies "invented" for the occasion.

If we drive businesses out of the country with high taxes and regulations, the result for the USA will be lower wages and lower living standards.

Oppressive taxation of success will damage the country--it already is.

    - - - Updated - - -

you are a one trick pony, dan. we already have a progressive tax system. How about a system where everyone has some skin in the game?

Give 'em a choice between joining the war or paying higher taxes, I'm sure they'll opt for the taxes. Wealthy people don't fight worth crap.

GE is building lightbulbs in china, GM is building cars in china and mexico, apple is building phones in china, no TVs are made in the USA, Steel mills in the USA are closing, commercial shipbuilding no longer exists in the USA.

Why have those companies left? Taxes and unions. They can no longer be competitive if they build products in the USA. FACT

wrong, they will just leave the country and take their businesses with them. Rich people can live anywhere, its normal people like us that suffer when taxation drives business out of the country

Since they've already sent their businesses overseas for the most part, why would you oppose them leaving as well?

You're a Republican so I'm sure you've heard the term "self-sufficiency". Why would you allow yourself to suffer on account of the rich?

That is kind of what we do now. But again, IMO it is important to maintain a balance between necessary safety nets and disincentivizing people to work.

That has been the result of low taxes and regulation.

Tax payments are proportionately the lowest in 60 years. Do you have a theory that fits with the facts?

Our tax system is significantly less progressive than it was.

I know there are people out there who would rather collect welfare checks than go to work, I just haven't come across any. Seriously.

"Kind of what we do now" is merely play shell games with Statism; not solve simple poverty due to the inefficiency of a natural rate of unemployment under capitalism. How can a War on Poverty ever solve it? Only a warfare-state needs perpetual warfare to justify its existence; a welfare-state is free to use market friendly means without war or analogies to war.

I believe we should distinguish between "trickle down" economics and supply side economics which should supply us with better governance at lower cost.

I do know a few, but the majority of the people I know taking public assistance are working poor, they work 2-3 part time, minimum wage jobs and still need something like food stamps to make sure their kids eat at night.

Want some irony? I know a few families where the parents are die hard obama/democrat haters, but they are some of the most dependent on welfare of some sort I have ever met. I ask them what would happen if the government decided to just stop sending them food stamps, or what ever they may be using at this point and they just shrug their shoulders, that the government wouldn't do that. What's even more of a riot is some of these same people complain about welfare queens.... really, they do. Go figure that one out.

Well, republicans have taken the term supply side economics and have been using it instead of trickle down for a while.

Maybe we can remind them that supply side economics should be supplying us with better governance at lower cost.

What I am talking about as far as the rich goes are these people who think if the government takes a lot more money from them, some how they are going to get some of it that will make their life better. I don't see that happening. The government will spend it. Probably on welfare for millions of new citizens that will qualify for welfare as they join the unemployment ranks. But for the millions of low wage earners, it will have no effect on them.

I'm not against taxing them more as long as it isn't so high that they start leaving the country. I'm all for changing the laws that will eliminate some of these crazy deductions the rich get that we can't. Or making it against the law to lobby our representatives for favors. I'm all for prosecuting these rich people who cheat and steal. That have inside information to the stock market. But that isn't what most of these Liberals are complaining about. They want to see the redistribution of their wealth to them. That just isn't going to happen unless it's through jobs. Get the rich to invest in a business, it takes money they have to spend. Get a job in that business and it will build your wealth. That's the only way I can see where the redistribution of wealth is going to happen, where the people make out. Give it to the government, they will only blow it and the average American hasn't gained a thing. What we need to do is come out with incentives to encourage the wealthy to invest. Incentives to get these companies to move back to the states. Then you build jobs and jobs builds wealth that helps the average American.

That's just it isn't it? The laws & tax codes are written (by bought and paid for sock puppets) in such a way, that the unscrupulous most unethical practitioners in the rich category are exempt from scrutiny and therefore prosecution. As of yet "NONE" of the bigger players involved in cheating, stealing, purchasing sock puppets etc... that created our current economic crisis, are being held accountable.

Something that becomes obvious the more you research how and by what means many of the richest Americans obtain/maintain their wealth. If you are poor and want to become wealthy, don't you think it would be impossible to understand how to become even financially independent, if you hadn't studied how others got that way?

I believe the wealthiest are faithful enough to capitalism to ensure we get more "efficient" politicians at election time, if they may otherwise need to pay wartime tax rates, even for a war on drugs.
