San Jose has changed so much over the decades. I remember when Santa Clara County was mostly orchards. The Mexicans are getting pushed out of San Jose by the Vietnamese. The Vietnamese are a stronger people than the Mexicans.
Sorry to hear you feel that way Herk. We do have a real issue with homelessness- and it is a complex problem which has defied any easy answers. I have lived here over 20 years, and was here when it started to really multiply, saw the plateau and now the chronic problem. I could go on about it for hours. But...for most of the City it is barely on the radar- in my neighborhood there are 2 homeless guys. Wierdos and freaks? Certainly- we pride ourselves on those- though as my wife said recently "when I moved to SF I expected much more". But the majority of us just consider them local color which dates back to Emperor Norton. I happen to like a little bit of wierdo and freak in my life. Most of the time we just do the same things everyone else does- go to work, take our kids to sports, that kind of thing, but we also have beaches and parks and festivals and street fairs and North Beach and the Mission and China Town and the Ball Park...the Exploratoreum, the Legion of Honor, the Academy of Sciences, the Asian Art Museum, the Modern Art Museum...oh and the cable cars. I really have no idea what you would consider 'liberal psychosis' but we have a very liberal government- too liberal as far as I am concerned- but the people are still people. I love San Francisco. I suppose someday I will move somewhere else...but I can't say I really want to.
I lived in Portland, Oregon for a few years working as a contracted pilot for a FedEx feeder route in the Pacific NW. I've been to SF numerous times as it was an assigned route on occasion. It's a beautiful city, but rather expensive, liberal and basically not my cup of tea. Hey it's your home, you like it...more power to you. The entire "Left" coast is looney as far as I'm concerned. It's nothing personal.
Hey- you lived in Portland and thought San Francisco is too liberal San Francisco is too expensive....no way around that though. I just wish a lot more people would think that way and the demand would go down some!
How is that?.. can they lift heavier (*)(*)(*)(*)? I checked out MMA and boxing champs.. seems Mexicans are tougher.. i havent been able to locate a Mexican vs. Vietnamese face off on strength competitipon on the intertoobes.. please post source.
San Jose is the largest Vietnamese city in the world outside of Hanoi and Saigon. I'm referring to cultural strength, not physical strength.
Exactly! I think SF passed the law that the naked slobs have to have a towel w/them to sit on in the restaurants, but that's the only so-called 'consideration' they've approved of in regards to others.... SF is the cesspool of the US........
They're crazier at the poker table too. Not that I care. They keep handing me their stacks when they miss their gutshots.
The weather in SF often sucks in comparison to Santa Cruz. It's 75 degrees here today. You must live in the Sunset District.
Yes, I think you should take a kindergarten class on field to trip through the Castro district, you will have a lot of 'splain n' to do. Or better yet, wait until the Bay to Breakers run happens and take them then, their parents will thank you for the cultural enlightenment.
I would never live in SF...cause I have kids, would avoid to many areas and couldn't get close to afford the extravagant costs. But....I have heard that it is not necessary to have air conditioning there. Always thought that sounded nice.
I noticed they think Idaho will be a part of it. Last I checked those crazy white folks up there would disabuse them of that thought really fast. Idahoans are nuts compared to even the Appalachies around here. I doubt those mormons in Utah will agree either.
It's not necessary to have air conditioning any where on the coast of Northern California. The summers are mild and the winters are mild.
The faux Twain quip, "The Coldest Winter I ever spent was a Summer in San Francisco" is a bit of a stretch, but it is colder there than most places in the Bay Area. I once worked at a daycare center for a private school in the East Bay. In early August, we were setting up, cleaning and basically getting the daycare in shape for the coming school year. My boss came in and said she had purchased a used freezer for the daycare and asked me to take my truck to her house and have her fiancee help me put it in my truck. I was in shorts and a t-shirt. It was 78 degrees. I got to SF an hour later at noon and it was 56 degrees. But don't take my word for it. Ask anyone who has ever seen more than a few Giants night home games in August at Candlestick.
I have a single room mobile AC. I might use it for a few days every other summer. I do like that convenience, but in my mind, central air is a waste. Open a window. Your cats will love you.
I worked in the Financial District for a few years. I couldn't deal with the crowds on Market, and the packed buses. I grew up in a small town. Santa Cruz reminds me of it.
