The Saudis will not fight unless the Turks do...and they have the largest army in Nato. Russia says their invasion force is lined up at the border and they are training the Syrians on ways to fight them. Nato will be discussing the Saudis offer this week.

Of course fighting ISIS is just a pretense, since they are supported by Turkey as well as Saudi Arabia. They only want to grab a chunk of Syria. Assad in the meantime said that any nation that is not invited by him and/or does not have permission by the UN, is invading sovereign Syrian territory.

Actually Kerry reminds me of our Philip Hammond in that they are both a total waste of space.

I just don't understand, why don't we don't help Putin then? What is so bad about Assad? Whatever it might be why can't we work that out? Our enemy there is ISIS which under any circumstance is infinitely worse and Assad/Putin are fighting them too, aren't they?

Why are we at cross purposes with everyone else there, do we like ISIS or what?

To my understanding, Assad recognizes himself in an Islamic culture but his government is generally secular oriented. If Assad leaves we get another theocratically oriented Islamic state, do we not? Why are we trying to do that?

The US and Russia may have come to an understanding on Syria and Iran, but the US is still going after Putin no matter what. Getting Putin is an altogether different level and longer term game.

'Getting' Putin', even though he's an evil bastard, is an absurd aim for the US. If they only recognised he's one of their own, an obscenely wealthy capitalist with little or no concern for those he walks over to add to his wealth and empire. Russian patriotism for him is no more than a cover for his mafia like methodology.

Absolutely right. They're relentless in their pursuit of the regime change in Moscow. They're prepared to go into extraordinary lengths to get the job done. I just hope they won't start a real war.

I'd feel less worried about it if I thought they had the wit to pull back when they realise that they've well and truly effed up. And to think I once had such faith in and admiration for America.

Me too. But I bet that was before Reagan came along and cocked it up along with Thatcher.

Indeed he was mocking the Saud. Did they manage to counter with anything or did they think they could play like Democrats and ignore it?

My understanding is that Wahabism (actually a pejorative term to its practitioners) has both a militant side and a quietist one, and the Sauds, at least officially, practice quietism. There was an article on it linked here once but I forget the link. I THINK they were called Salafis, but I am not very sure of that.

My understanding is that whichever branch of Islam they follow, they reject anything and everything after the 7th century, and that they want to return to that time. Bitter Lake gives an in-depth explanation of Wahhabism, and I didn't get the impression there's a quietist and a militant side, only the latter. I can't see that 'quietism' would do much to achieve an agenda? That's about as unlikely as 'The meek shall inherit the earth'??

Oh, then defending a nation from an aggressor is a threat? Thank you for telling me, I would never have known otherwise.

Uhhh, is this also part of Washington's psychological warfare? The brilliance never ceases to amaze me. :wall:

Now a bit of reality. Russians never make threats, they consider them a sign of weakness. They merely stated what the consequences would be if Syria was invaded.

Of course Washington doesn't want war, I mean no body wants to fight, but when others aren't willing to do everything you tell them to do, then they're leaving Washington with no other choice. ..right Alpha?

Is bullying a new Orwellian concept of democracy?

Why AA keeps playing a court jester at this forum is beyond me. You really shouldn't be commenting any longer on geopolitics. Aren't you ashamed? Your ratio of getting prediction correctly is just abysmal. 1 out 10. :wall: Give it up.

Turks gave the USA an ultimatum. Either them or Kurds. It will be interesting to see how is that one going to play out. The USA is in the tight spot. All eyes on them.

What exactly has Assad or Syria or Russia won? The are 7 million Syrian refugees out there. Syria is in shambles and will not recover in a generation. Polio is back after having been eradicated in 1979.
