The biggest argument for continuint our strange "alliance" with the Saudi royal family is the very unfortunate consequences of any alternative. Like Jordan, KSA is a monarchy police state and in traditional Arab style, loyalty to the ruler is dependent on largesse. In the modern era this is expressed by free medical care, education etc and good paying no-show jobs. As oil wealth has grown, so has the amount of royal baksheesh needed to keep the gears turning. With the short run drop in oil prices and the long run decline in the world petroleum market, the sustainability of the current system is doomed. The King has recognized this and begun an ambitious plan to shift the economic foundations of his monarchy. Will it work? We had better hope so.

The man should be credited for pointing out what is obvious most everywhere else but we should understand the the government also has a leash on the Arab News. They can allow enough get through in order that transparency can be claimed but not make journalistic freedom too much of a habit. It should also be noted that Rasheed Abu Alsamh was educated in the US and now lives in Brazil.

What does this have to do with the fact that the Saudi textbooks promote hatred of Jews and Christians.

LOL sure .. the one's for foreigners. back to head in sands of denial for you. If the topic is Saud, like defending a lover, you would deny the sky is blue.

Even those high up in the Saud pyramid do not deny what was in the texts.

    https://freedomhouse.org/report/special-reports/saudi-arabias-curriculum-intolerance#.U9fzVhZ-9SU

So Prince Saud Al-Faisal admits that this hate material was in the textbooks but Margot claims that teaching Jews and Christians are enemies of Muslims is "promoting friendship"

Saudi Arabia is nothing like Jordan and you haven't been to either.

Saudi Bin Faisel died two years ago.

Most who write about KSA have never been there, they just quote each other and people like you lap it up.

The King of Jordan is a friend of mine as he went to Deerfield Academy here in Western Massachusetts.

He is a good guy and is very Americanized.

Why should we hope so? Let them cash their bonds and park their money any direvitive they choose. If our market crashes then it wasn't as strong as the government, politicians and pundits have been telling us. It's all relative.

    I know.

I know you have spent a great deal of time in Saudi Arabia Margot but you have to admit....the Saudi Royalty does not promote such education to the masses.

    What are you talking about?

They started one of their 5 year programs with 250,000 graduate level scholarships in every field from engineering to maritime and international law, to economics, to medicine, and so on.

The Saudis are very westernized.. they just still wear traditional dress which is cooler and neater than trousers and a belt.

Yes....they are more than happy to back education of their people specific to things that can benefit the Kingdom.

But as far as free thought and anything that might conflict with a very strict interpretation if Islam...no.

Ibn Saud wasn't Wahhabi.. He was raised by his uncle the Emir of Kuwait who was profoundly anti-Wahhabi..

Don't let that Wahhabi crap go to your head.

    I agree.

And I agree with most of what you post as I KNOW you have been there and I KNOW you unlike most people here who spout stupidities about things they don't know have always spoken from first hand experience.

    And so have I.

So I would expect you know that there are elements in that country who are a serious problem.
