It's self explanatory. Which part didn't you understand? Didn't you know the EU wants to reduce the size of the Commission? It does have support for this from non-EU organisations.

No, I did not, but maybe it's the language barrier.

Barrier? Likely. There is a lot of them in Europe...still.

Underpinned only by its political fracture that impacts the social. For example all of a sudden I want to visit Stockholm and improve my Swedish so that I can understand them better when they talk. There's a thousand things standing in my way apart from the former borders and the former documents I needed to carry. The most plausible answer from this current form of Europe is that I will never see Stockholm. A barrier can't ever be cultural but one that prevents the intercultural.

An image opposed to this one is of you Englishmen and your flexibility and practicality, DYNAMISM of movement between for example you and Scotland. You are such different cultures yet you have had no problem co-existing culturally and would never have. Political is what the problem between you now is.

This thread's supposed to be about Scotland and issues related to it. I'll be pleased to answer your post if you put it on one of the EU threads.

Your teeth are showing, and is that a tad of bigotry? The referendum will be held when he wants, no longer the insistence of your reprobates being forced onto the Scottish nation!

    WE CHOOSE!

Okay so you don't want my commiseration, just my pity!

    Have it your own way.

    Regards

I love the way Salmond told everyone "yeah yeah, no worries, we'll get automatic EU membership, job's a good 'un".

The Barroso was all like "Uh uh uuhhhhh, ain't no way girlfriend".

But seriously, the Scots should be careful who they get in bed with here. Salmond seems to be winging this and relying on some kind of Braveheart mentality to achive his agenda. I have no problem at all with Scotish independence, if the people vote for it, based on clear and accurate information. The problem is that the British press are not known for printing clear and accurate information, and Salmond is making it up as he goes along and lying is seems.

Barosso is not in a situation to give a ruling on this matter. Newsnight Scotland's 3 Legal experts last night said that. There is nothing about it in the EU. The nearest there has been is when Germany became united. In addition most of the EU's problems come from Spain's position on Catalonia independence. Obviously Scotland is a different issue as it is just going on a democratic vote. Anyhow's last night they made the point that no one really knows what will happen. rUK don't even know if they will have to rejoin - should they still wish to of course. This seems to be the thing the Unionists have been pushing more than anything and now it has been brought to the forefront. Nicola Sturgeon is asking the EU for talks to discuss. http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2012/dec/10/scotland-urgent-talks-eu-membership. If as seemed more likely from talks last night, this results in the SNP being able to give the Scottish people a reassurance before the Referendum that the position will be good for Scotland, then all the propaganda from England will be an own goal.

Independence really is not about Salmond and like you say the British press is not too good about providing accurate information. However in this instance their insistence in pressing for the answer looks like landing in favour of the Independence vote.

Isn't more the point that Salmond seems to be making this up as he goes along? There will not be automatic membership...

Does the EU seriously propose to expell five million citizens? This is all about Catalonia and the survival of Francoism in Spain, not about serious things.

Does Scotland have automatic membership if it gains independence, yes or no? Because Salmond has been leading people to believe its a yes.

No, there's no bigotry. But you're desperate to throw off the English. You've made that perfectly clear, so the sooner the better as far as we're concerned.

SO CAMPAIGN FOR ALEX SALMOND TO HOLD THE REFERENDUM NOW AND CHOOSE THEN!

I don't want or need anything from a socialist Scots Nationalist. You save your energy for yourself.

Salmond matters less than you think. The issue is whether people want Independence or not. You surely do not think the only person the people in Scotland listen to is Salmond, that he is never questioned or that most people lack the ability to make up their minds on the issue.

As I explained in my previous post that is only the opinion of one person. Given that there is no ruling with the EU for this it is as the EU has previously said something they are not sure of. The issue really is whether an Independent Scotland would argue conditions from within or from without. As the EU has never expelled any country, it would appear it would need to if this was to go as Barosso said. Seems highly unlikely and far more simply rhetoric to please Spain. He however will not be who decides whether Scotland stays in the EU. As I said in my previous post Nicola Sturgeon is arranging talks with the EU to clarify the situation. I cannot believe they would suggest Scotland leave if she wanted to stay and think the most likely result of such talks will be an arrangement which the Scottish people feel pleased with.

Yes the EU too is like that. But I was talking about more like the world.

The EU being like this is the fault of every single of the 27.

I've said more than once, that I don't want to be in the EU at any price! But federalisation in an EU context is a lot better than we have as part of the UK in either an EU OR a UK context. If federalisation had ever been an option within the UK....we would possibly not be here now..but if we have to have a federal system..why not one we can join immediately, which we choose for ourselves, rather than one grudgingly arrived at bit by bit until the oil goes and the Union decides we are no longer useful. After all, we, who are pro-independence won't go away and will do this time and time again as the chance arises.

I have never quite understood why there is a growing ground-swell in the UK, particularly in England, complaining about the fact that the EU has too much control of UK lives, within a federal system..but there appears to be a lot of difficulty understanding that a groundswell of Scottish opinion has the same problems, doubled, with Scotland being subject to a much greater measure of control by the UK as well as the control the EU exerts on the UK.

Given that no country is an island anymore, alliances to a greater or lesser extent appear to be necessary (for the benefit of businesses and/or trashing other countries mostly), but the alliances which suit one country do not automatically suit every country (otherwise we'd have a one world government). Personally. I'd rather be in EFTA than under the direct control of the EU. But if we have to be in the EU.....then I don't particularly care if representation is adjusted, as long as it is population proportional..but I'd be very surprised if that representation adjustment will include commissioners or any other body which has only one representative per country.

If the EU wants to reduce in cost/size, then the place to start would be in areas like cutting out two of the three sets of buildings they have to maintain and travel among.... and cutting back overloaded committees...like the 350 + members of the Committee of the Regions, and the 340 + members of the European Economic and Social Committee for a start.....and maybe even in the parliament itself?
