There are some very bright and accomplished apologists, but be careful. A PhD is not a PhD. Some of them come from institutions that are churning out degrees like candy. Hundreds of institutions have sprung up with the express purpose of giving a premise of seriousness where none actually exists.

Godhood hasn't changed one iota since the first human got the first idea of it. It was, is and will always be supernatural and therefore couldn't, can't and won't ever be dealt with empirically. However, as you point out so eloquently yourself, not only do people exist who still think that godhood can be handled by empirical methods, they also seek to become educated in these methods that never existed. So in an akward and ironic kind of way, the more degrees a person takes for the sole purpose of dealing with gods empirically, the more uneducated he actually shows himself to be.
