That's all good, except for one small detail - Rafael Cruz lied about the child nudity. The nudity was of an adult in a rap video. The child was watching it. Netflix is not in violation of US laws. Whether the movie is appropriate or in good taste is another discussion, but no law was broken.

In the movie? yes. It's disturbing in girls that age but no more than is commonly acceptable just about anywhere and practically unavoidable unless you do what I said, that is, you cannot really prevent younger girls from wearing just about all the same things older girls do.

I remember I jokingly once tried telling my little niece that her latest outfit would be best accessorized with a lampost and a cop car. BIG mistake, her mother nearly forbade us to speak together, telling me in no uncertain terms that you NEVER tell a young girl not to wear something you deem "inappropriate" unless you want her to outgrow it years after she should, if at all.

Women follow the seasons and they follow fashion and both of these things sometimes dictate that they should wear revealing clothing, which they do in their own taste. As a nudist myself I think we do not grant people enough freedom in this area rather than too much.

    You said it, I didn't

It's about prepubescent girls being trained to be dancers, and some of the dance clothes and costumes are revealing, but no more than girls that age commonly wear at the mall every day.

I have no idea what's actually in this except for the headlines, but on this general subject the final pageant scene in Little Miss Sunshine was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

What a stupid rationalization. "kids are going to do it anyway so let them and (hopefully) they'll eventually grow out of it"? If a kid kills someone then I guess we should just let them and say "meh, they'll grow out of it"? If a kid snorts cocaine we should just let them because "meh, they'll grow out of it"?

There are lines that should not EVER be crossed. Child exploitation and sexualizing them should NEVER be accepted or rationalized. Period.

I don't watch these shows Cruz watches, so can't say, but if what Cruz says is true, then yes, investigate them, of course

I would investigate this to while we are at it

Cruz, the opportunistic toad that he is, made a criminal referral to the DOJ without confirming that there was, in fact, anything remotely illegal going on. He never watched the video for himself, didn't have a staffer do it, and didn't even bother to confirm with anyone who had actually seen it that there was, in fact, child nudity. He lied.

Or, he's an unforgivably sloppy and incompetent idiot. Pick one.

And Adam Schiff made a criminal referral to the DOJ claiming that President Trump colluded with the Russians to steal the 2016 elections. He supposedly had trunks full of information that proves it. But it turned out the trunks were as empty as his head.

The fact is that Cruz never said he had watched the film. He said that the information being provided makes it look like a violation of US Child Porn laws. The fact is that many of the people that has seen the film says that it give support of the child porn sex trafficking's in this country. Even the film makers and Netflix are in conflict as to the intent of the film. The film makers claims that it is about children from conservative Muslim families that are acting out in defiance of their families. Netflix claims that it is a statement against the oversexing of underage children.

Frankly, I do not think this type of film has any place in the US. My suggestion is for everyone not to watch the film on Netflix. Then they will have to remove it.

The movie being discussed agrees since that's what it is about. I think it had the tv equivalent of an R rating though I didn't really check

I read last night on Twitter that Netflix has lost $9 Billion since #cancelNetflix started trending.

I also read conservatives blaming libertarianism for allowing this to happen. I agree, but the fact that Netflix has lost so much money also proves libertarian philosophy correct. The free market will regulate itself. In this case, if Netflix continues promoting this type of content it will not survive economically.

I skimmed it once I heard about it and it’s a typical foreign film. The scenes with the girls dancing are disturbing though and NOT cute. This from a dad with a daughter who’s a dancer so I see the competitions. Sometimes the choreography goes too far with the preteens. And even with the teens I’ve nudged my wife a few times during shows and we shake our heads.

    Om the link:

“''Cuties' is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” a spokesperson told Fox News. “It’s an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up – and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.”

    Also from the link:

"Netflix did not directly address the potential DOJ probe but said there is "no underage nudity in the film."

It's a documentary, meant to be informative, not salacious.

Oh good grief. It isn't about watching girls. Even grown men should be aware of how easily it has become to sexualize children, and what could perhaps be done about it. Don't millions of grown men have daughters? This documentary could provide information of the behavioral signs to look for in their own little girls. Forewarned is forearmed.

Showing how ugly it is was the whole point of the documentary. In no way does it encourage, or glorify, the behavior of pedophiles. Stop it, yourself. You and others here are deliberately misconstruing this.

I went and skimmed through it to see what the hub-bub was, and to be honest - I've seen mainstream waifu anime that is far worse. Manufactured poutrage fail.

This documentary tries to expose the problem facing these girls who are encouraged to be older than they are . Pedophilia is when the owner of the teen show hangs out in the girls dressing room " doing an inspection".
Perhaps this film could help expose and shame the owners of the pre teen and teen shows to clean up their acts

Many years ago before I cut the cable I was channel surfing and stopped at what I was sure must have been an SNL skit about children's pageants and the moms screaming about them - and I laughed until I realized it wasn't some SNL skit, it was an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras.

I turned it off immediately. Seriously, that stuff - I can't believe it was approved to go on-air. If To Catch a Predator were still around, they could easily find new perps just by seeing who was a regular viewer of shows like these.
