the "too cheap to meter" argument about nuclear power - something the nuclear
industry never said.
The global financial crisis is a classic example of the power of poor people. Here
Clinton and Greenspan forced the financial institutions to take on bad debt. These
institutions spread the risk (as you would) and caused a meltdown.

I think the rich in Western societies are the most exploited. The sense that everyone
is out to use you is quite palpable in rich people, according to wealth managers.
In Australia some rich person buys a Porsche and he's already paying 100k just in
"luxury tax" - and then he's paying a premium for the insurance, the service costs, spare
parts etc.. And not to mention the whole industry who built the car in the first place.
Everyone is out to get a piece of the action.
In my former job we would automatically add a premium to our service based on the
suburb, and add more if the household looked extra rich.
It's the same, ultimately with tax. I understand the top 1% in NTC pay about 30% of the
city's taxes.

There have been repeated indications that patients who’ve had coronavirus and been “cured” don’t always enjoy immunity. First was the report from China about some patients testing negative after recuperating — and then testing positive on a follow-up test. Second was yesterday’s news of a Chinese study that found some people who’ve recovered from the disease had few antibodies in their blood afterward, suggesting that they might be vulnerable to reinfection.

Now there’s a study from South Korea with a new theory to explain what’s happening. As in China, some patients in Korea who seem to have beaten the disease are testing negative and then … positive. Leading doctors to wonder: Are some “cured” patients really not cured? If so, how many others spanning the world are walking around right now, believing they’re out of the woods when in fact they’re still infected, inadvertently spreading the virus to others in the belief that they’re no longer contagious because they tested negative?

The coronavirus may be “reactivating” in people who have been cured of the illness, according to Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About 51 patients classed as having been cured in South Korea have tested positive again, the CDC said in a briefing on Monday. Rather than being infected again, the virus may have been reactivated in these people, given they tested positive again shortly after being released from quarantine, said Jeong Eun-kyeong, director-general of the Korean CDC.

“While we are putting more weight on reactivation as the possible cause, we are conducting a comprehensive study on this,” Jeong said. “There have been many cases when a patient during treatment will test negative one day and positive another.”​

That’s NOT the point and never has been.

The point is that if you tax the rich you end up paying more of your money as lower and middle class than you would have if you had just taken the tax in the first place.

Meaning the business owners are “the rich”. If you tax businesses or business owners an inordinate amount, do you think they just grab their ankles, bend over and take the tax? Of course not. Unlike the workers they have the ability to pass that tax along to the consumers and so that’s what they do.

When you tax a business owner he’s not simply going to lose that money. He’s either going to decrease the quality of his good or service by using cheaper materials or providing less for the same price (ie a smaller amount of fries for the same price) or he’s going to reduce his workforce by cutting hours and pushing people to part time and decreasing benefits or he’s going to increase the price for his goods or service.

What he’s NOT going to do is simply pay the tax. That means EVERY product and service that people buy, from cars to T-shirt’s to medicine to furniture to video games and EVERYTHING in between is either going to decrease in quality or amount or is going to increase in price. The consumer will end up paying FAR more when you tax the rich than if they had simply taken a tax on the lower and middle classes in the first place.

 

Yes. But there's more.

We have never created a tax scheme that effectively taxes "the rich". Between the lobbyists and the accountants they never pay it, so Always watch what a new tax scheme does to the middle class, because that is always the real point. They sell the increase by says "but, we tax the rich even more!" But they evade those taxes, the only effective tax changes are those leveled on the Middle Class.

If they Truly wanted to tax the rich, we would go to a consumption tax, the more money you spend the more you pay in taxes.

But, they are never for this, because it eliminates virtually all the graft available through monkeying with the tax code.

I'm all for a straight consumption tax. That way each of us will be able to immediately calculate our share of any changes in spending, which also provides for a more intelligent decision regarding proposed policies. Which, is exactly why none of these "tax the rich folks" are for it.

As is usually the case, the folks pushing "tax the rich" really don't give a damn about taxing the rich.

 

Damn capitalism, if only we were used to bread lines, and sub par health care, then we would notice no change at all in our lives right now. Damn capitalism, damn you to hell.

 

Sadly, I have to agree. I take the fact that the financiers and bankers helped the govt write the
new rules after the Global Financial Crisis to be a form of corruption.
But, so too the fact that the govt brought on this crisis by forcing these institutions to take on
bad loans - loans given to poor people by Clinton and Greenspan.

So, I suppose there's never going to be pure Capitalism, just as there's never going to be pure
democracy. But hey, I am happy with "mostly democratic Capitalism."

 

When they do this a competitor will simply step in and take their business (unless they are “too big to fail” which we shouldn’t allow to happen in the first place). These people do not exist in a vacuum. If you think small business owners are rich they are not — they average between $40k on the low end to $500k on the upper end — you need to review what the top 0.1% earn.

An extreme example of the wealth inequality involved: if we went full on asset seizure and took all everything above $1,000,000,000.00 that the rich actually own (that is 2 thousand times what you just classified someone as rich) we would net $6.5T and all of these people would still be billionaires.
This number doesn’t even include the estimated $8.7T that is stashed in tax havens.

Millionaires are not even in the same ballpark as these people, much less small business owners.
