The so-called "misery index" is first of all a phony measure that simply adds the inflation and unemploymnt rates together without any consideration at all being given to the matter of whether it is a 1% increase in inflation or a 1% increase in unemployment that has a more deleterious effect within an economy.

The so-called "misery index" is further (and as actually applied by right-wing liars similar to the ones who continue to poison the environment today) nothing more than a synonym for oil price spike. The index soared under Nixon and Ford as the result of the 1973-74 oil price spike, and it soared again under Carter as the result of the 1979-80 oil price spike.

These were exogenous shocks (that means from outside the system) that neither Nixon nor Carter had input to or control over. Nixon and then Ford tried to deal with the effects through wage-and-price controls. That didn't work. Carter went a different route -- letting inflation run to do the necessary rationing for him. That worked reasonably well, and by the time Reagan took over, the worst of the matter was long over. But Reagan tried to nuke inflation anyway and ended up driving us into what was the worst recession in 50 years, including what are still the highest unemployment rates since 1940.

Meanwhile, if all these right-wing mealy-mouths had any actual faith in their "misery index" yammering, they'd all be extolling and longing for the policies of the two Presidents who presided over record lows in that measure. That would be Lyndon Johnson and Bill Clinton. Why don't I hear all this clamor for doing it the Johnson or Clinton way?

 

Also lame-brained off-the-wall hot air and dart-throwing not replicable by anyone else anywhere. By contrast, every serious private or public sector analysis of ARRA comes to very much the same results. Results that you, of course, do not want to hear. Spoils your child-like little right-wing fantasy, I guess.

 

Every metric that indicts Dem incompetence is 'phony'. Ask any 'journalist'.

It is a well established fact Republicans and Libertarians want to “lift” the human spirit. Liberals just want to tax the wealthy and give other people a free government handout!
