No, progressivism ruined our country, though it brought about women's right to vote, the creation of the NAACP, and work improvements. I can get behind these last few, but not some of the world politics the progressives attempted. They were horrid plans.

Taft made changes in the way our government appropriated funds. I'm sure those increased the deficit or created one. They also led to the elimination of the gold standard and he creation of the ability for government to print more or fewer dollars in an effort to control the economy. Inflation took over. Yeah, not so good.

 

point of order. Republicans are suspending military pay. They are the ones who shut down the government. Republicans own the house and senate. they can pass any budget bill they want, and the democrats can do nothing at all to stop it. Republicans chose to shut down the government, instead.

 

That is not entirely accurate. The reps don't "control" the senate when 60 votes are needed. The system was deliberately set up so one party couldn't just ignore the minority.

We are watching the system work as designed despite republicans seeming unawareness. I refuse to believe that McConnell and Ryan don't understand this clearly. Therefore their claims of dems shutting down the government is more a self condemnation of their inability to negotiate with dems and trumps erratic and incompetent "deal making" leadership.

Oh well, let em make up all the excuses they want for any delays in all that winning they were supposed to be tired of by now.

Not entirely accurate. Here's how I see it -- Trump said he would sign what the House and Senate sent him. The dems tried to get him to agree to a clean amnesty bill for DACA, aka illegal Dreamers, but Trump refused. So the House of Representatives, both dems and repubs working together, came up with a budget bill with no mention of DACA. Why should DACA amnesty be in a budget bill? That bill went to the Senate where the dem leader, Chuck Schumer (D) enacted the Super Majority Rule, something he could procedurally do. That Rule requires 60 votes to pass a bill, not just 51 votes. So there is no way the repubs can pass the bill unless some dems join them. Well 5 dems joined with the repubs, but then two repubs, Graham & Flake, are against the bill. That gives the repubs a total of 54 votes by my count, 6 short. The dems will not vote for the bill unless there is amnesty for DACA (illegal immigrants aka Dreamers) added to the bill. The repubs will vote for the budget bill as is but not if amnesty is added. So in effect it was Schumer who stopped the bill and shut down the government. He has shut down the government to fight on the side of illegals. Trump is not responsible, he is just waiting for a bill to sign or veto, but he has said he will sign it. The repubs are not responsible because they will pass the budget bill as is. Notice Schumer is not smiling on camera any more. He is seeing the handwriting on the wall as the public is turning against the dems. Flake is dodging the press. Graham is talking to the press but not making sense. Tell me where I'm going wrong if you see it differently.

No, they could have used reconciliation, but McConnell chose not to. Schumer could do nothing to stop it.

Nope used up their three uses in a year on the tax bill. Can't use reconciliation which is why the republican party internal fractures prevented them gettin any immigration reform bill thru the house which is why Ryan didn't do DACA. He had enough trouble getting the CR thru with no dem votes.

Guess the republicans, after trying to cram a repeal and "promise to replace" of the ACA thru congress without democratic input or regular order, then the tax bill behind closed doors shutting out all dems, thought they could finesse the legislative agenda and get by without addressing the immigration issue. Didn't work and now Ryan and McConnell are between a rock and a hard place and blaming the dems for their own dysfunction. Ah politics - its not the truth its what's the excuse.
