This is a patent falsehood, sorry. Weight for weight of the raw ingredients, ALL processed foods (the kind that 'poor' people buy) are more expensive. You cannot add handling, packaging, and processing without adding cost.

A genuinely poor person would be living on cheap seasonal vegetables, and rice/beans .. all meals cooked from scratch. And they most definitely would not be buying high cost luxury foods like meat and dairy. I know this because I do know poor people. Real poor people, not fat Americans too lazy to cook and with an addiction to high calorie foods.

 

And because they sit around all day eating meat and cheese, and drinking soda or beer instead of water.
