It doesn't matter how we see things.. the freedom to own and carry firearms is essential to the freedom of the country and why they acknowledged that right in the constitution.

I’m surprised at gun ownership rates in Hawaii. Only nine states have higher ownership rates than Hawaii.

I would certainly hope our convictions are based on a firm enough foundation tragedy wouldn’t alter them. But we don’t have to just live with it. We need to fix the broken people problem. But we don’t like to do hard stuff and that would be hard.

If a member of my family was injured or killed in a mass shooting, I'm going to go out on a broad limb and guess that right before it happened, and they were scared and trying to hide, they probably would have preferred to have a gun.

Maybe that's just me, but if somebody is going to be pointing a gun at me, I think I would like to have something to point back.

The death rate from influenza and pneumonia in the US has been about 17 per 100,000 for the last 30 years. About the same as two states on the OP list of high firearm death rate states, Arkansas and South Carolina.

Seems to me that the list should be compared to how prevalent the poverty is.

    This is for New Mexico:
    • Low-income households: In 2008-2012, the rate of violent crime victimization was more than two times higher (39.8 per 1,000) among poor households compared with high income households (16.9 per 1,000).
    • Racial and ethnic minorities: Nonfatal violent crime victimization was greatest among American Indian (57 per 1,000) and non-Hispanic black (29 per 1,000) Americans compared with non-Hispanic white (23 per 1,000) and Hispanic (24 per 1,000) Americans based on data from 2001-2005.
    • Adolescents: In 2014, adolescents aged 12 to 17 had the highest rate of violent victimization by age at 1.7 per 1,000. The rate decreases continuously by age with adults aged 65 and older having the lowest rate at 0.3 per 1,000

Less than 0.01% of the U.S. population dies from guns.

    There is no crisis.

Remove suicides from those stats and get back to me.

2/3 of U.S. gun deaths are suicide.

Japan has stricter gun laws than the U.S., yet Japan has a higher suicide rate.

    How can that be?

Well, given that the U.S. population is 327 million, that makes 11,000 gun deaths only 0.0034% of the population.

So no, that's not "too many".

    Compared to what?

Table 10 Number of deaths from 113 selected causes, Enterocolitis due to Clostridium difficile, drug-induced causes, alcohol-induced causes, and injury by firearms, by age: United States, 2013

    Accidental discharge of firearms (W32-W34) - 505
Intentional self-harm (suicide) by discharge of firearms (X72-X74) - 21,175
Assault (homicide) by discharge of firearms (*U01.4,X93-X95) - 11,208
Discharge of firearms, undetermined intent (Y22-Y24) - 281

    Total: 33,168

    Drug-induced deaths (2,3) - 46,471

    http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr64/nvsr64_02.pdf

There are 13,303 MORE drug induced deaths than folks dying as a result firearms. However, the left advocates a war on guns (restrictions and bans) and yet pushes to legalize drugs spending $10 billion to combat substance abuse 'epidemic'. So would you be in favor of removing gun laws and spending $10 billion on gun safety and mental health considering suicide it the largest cause of gun deaths? If not, why not be specific please.

    It is.

In Hawaii, a permit is required to purchase firearms and guns must be registered with the state. Hawaii has some of the strictest gun laws in the country and while state law does permit concealed carry with a license, obtaining one is a rarity.

I'm hoping that you do not approve of the increasing level of firearm fatalities in the US that already far exceeds that of all other advanced nations.

As is obvious from the data, some states incur far fewer than others.

Yes. But without the ability to control hearts and minds of others what sould we do about it?

Currently what people are suggesting is take away your gun so that other people don't kill you. That doesn't make any kind of sense.

The tragic consequences of firearm permissiveness include homicides, accidents, and suicides. There is no reason to pretend otherwise.

That's just blaming political rivals for all the evil in the world.

People who are members of gun clubs aren't the same people that go shoot up schools or Walmart.

So trying to blame people because they disagree with you about abortion is you doing absolutely nothing, it's you not caring about your kids.

If you have some way of looking at the data that shows Alaska, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma with the lowest rate of firearm fatalities, and Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Hawaii, and Connecticut with the highest, you may have been wielding your Sharpie with wild abandon.

False, depression and other mood disorders lead to self inflicted fatalities. Accidental killings result from carelessness. It's not because people are allowed to own guns.

it would also be important to take into consideration other factors.
