According to @Daniel Light they do it because it's their nature.

They don't want to live in poverty.

Try to live on $1000 a month and food stamps.

I remember my father talking about people like that. You know, the lost generation. That is what they were called.

The lost generation is who gave us the information age and the revolution in genetic engineering. They have changed the world more than any previous generation. So lets see what happens. ;)

The liberal flakes that I know focus on ways to help their local community. The new rage is forming businesses that also do public service as a part of their business model.

You'd think that smart folks like @Reiver would know stuff like this.

Humans are driven to work for a living, to achieve security. They work for the things they need and because of ambition. The drive to make a living...putting food on the table and the drive to advance your career work hand in hand.
If there is no need to work for your necessities then drive its self is derailed. You will have a lot of unhappy unproductive individuals complaining that government is still not doing enough..

I wouldn't say vast majority, but I do think it would be a significant minority, enough to make society unworkable. Most teachers would tell you that. There is a large group of kids today (according to my wife) that just want to sit around and play videogames/watch youtube all day.

Its the Dunning-Kruger effect. I'm probably just too dumb to know I'm wrong... or someone is.

When I was teaching in an inner city school in the mid 1990s (before welfare reform), I overheard a girl complaining that she couldn't get "her check for her baby" because her parents made too much money. Her family was solidly middle class, so they didn't qualify for her to get a welfare check to set up her own household, like some of her friends (who's families were on welfare themselves). Different people are different. My wife was a librarian for a semester (took over for a lady who had a baby) in the late 1990s. She had kids tell her "why should I learn to read" my parents can't, and they are doing just fine.

You just described the dream scenario of the average Dem Party voter. It's pretty much what Barack Obama MEANT by "Hope and Change!"

+10,000 . . . and I nominate this for post of the month. Very nice; and also quite accurate.

I've re-thought this. I don't need another warning for telling the truth. That just gets old after a while.

He told the truth. That was the objectionable part to the wannabe socialists.

One would think that all these wannabe socialists touting their cause as the only sane one in this world would have already known and understood the human fundamentals of which you just wrote. But instead it consistently goes -- zipp! -- over their heads. I guess that's WHY they are socialists in the first place.

You are correct...it was a personal attack...and whether I considered it warranted or not is not in play.

I apologize to the guy I said it to...and to the forum.

I think you've been woefully informed on universal everything.
I'd reconsider your sources of information.
    And opt for real information.

I think you aren't listening to Ds or whoever is feeding you the BS is one you should not listen to.

But I'd be willing to hear who says we are driven to be taken care of by a nanny state.

Sorry to have pushed a button. Please calm down. This is simply a discussion forum.

We agree that there is a disincentive to work, correct? That's why people need to be induced to work by being paid. So why would someone work if they don't need to?

cause just graduating woudl increase that income for life, little things like that, as well as working would be a bonus on top of that... don't worry though, that wont happen for 10-20 years down the road until the jobs are scare and the voters have no choice but to vote for help.... now you could prevent that, pass laws making foreign outsourcing cost more, make foreign imports cost more, ect.... give tax incentives to corps the more employees they have... that will less the cost savings of automation

the republicans tax cuts for the rich will only make socialism a reality sooner, not later unless the rich actually trickle down for a change

Because it can be a creative process that is actually fun. Sorry for the pathetic losers who have to work at jobs they don’t like, but for those of us who enjoy their jobs (and there are a large number of us) it’s not tedious at all.

I guess that’s the difference, do conservatives on the thread work only because they have to while more liberal posters enjoy their work? I guess that would explain the number of whiny conservative posts.

    Wanna bet?

That other human nature is OPPORTUNISM. IOW, a huge majority of us will immediately stop trying under such conditions. Anyone who thinks ambition will cancel this out is in dreamland. Very few of us are actually ambitious.

Not "Americans", HUMAN BEINGS. And yes, the percentage of us who are happiest doing just that would probably shock you to the core.
