This is so much crap. On an even playing field Pits are no more aggressive than most dogs and less aggressive than some.

Pit Bulls have an owner problem. They are attractive to the wrong type of people. They appeal to the type of person that is more likely to mistreat or not socialize them properly. Add to that their strength, both body and jaw, and when stressed they can do a lot of damage. So yes a Pit Bull attack is more likely to result in serious injury. Those #'s you have regurgitated have been around for a long time and they do not pass muster. Repeat something enough and it becomes fact.

I do extensive volunteer work for a local SPCA. Most of my time is spent doing socialization and behavior modification with mistreated, anti social and abused dogs. We take in a lot of warrant seizure dogs. Many of them are Pits. When properly trained and socialized they are among the sweetest of dog breeds. They make excellent family pets.

Any breed of dog will become aggressive and bite when it is afraid and we don't heed the warning signs. Chihuahua's are more aggressive than Pit Bulls. Lucky for us their bark is worse than their bite.

I actually would totally support the alternative left :

    - No Muslims
    - No guns
    - No pitbulls
    - No police brutality
    - No ghetto black culture
    - No illegal immigrants

    Near-zero crime rate achieved.

The reason Pit Bulls will never be banned is that, to do so would be an admittance that there are very huge and significant genetic differences between different populations of the same species.
If you catch where this is going...

Nowhere, because dog races were created by men. Dog races are very different genetically because we bred them that way, to fill specialized roles. Nothing to do with natural selection.

Natural selection doesn't lead to ultra fast running dogs or miniature dogs the size of a rat. All those crazy dog races we invented wouldn't survive if we released them in the wild.

If we didn't mess with them there would only be wolves. Wolf races are not very different from each other.

Wow there's a lot of polarization on this topic. More than I expected.

My view on it is you are responsible for your dog. Whatever it does weather it gets out accidentally or attacks somebody whom you invited into your house that is 100% on you I don't care what kind of dog is it or animal for that matter.

Outside of that no I don't believe any particular breed of dog should be banned.

That being said I will never own one. They represent 71% of dog caused fatalities.

Negative Ghostrider. There are different temperaments within any breed. Western German Shepherds tend to be more docile and stand off-ish whereas the Eastern German Shepherds have a lot of dogs in the ranks that actually thrive on combat with people, they love to fight.

    Just to name one example.

    Then which is your view:

    1. Dogs have no independent brain and can no more make any decision than a plant or...
    2. You are so vastly superior a species to dogs that you have god-power control over them?

This is an example of the doggy person mentality: they have (for example) a pit bull, or a Staffordshire bull terrier. If anyone asks if it's wise to own a breed which could tear out chunks of a person until that person is a blood-soaked corpse, their response is always something like 'Oh that won't happen with (think of a name) . . . he's more likely to lick someone to death than attack them.' Then the next day we read of yet another kid who's little body has been ripped to shreds of flesh, blood and bone by one of these killer dogs, and the owner says 'Well he's never attacked anyone before!' :wall: I'm afraid there's something about dog obsessives - and it's probably genetic - which means they are simply not open to rational discussion on the subject.

I foster for Sheltie rescue and read up on dogs and try to stay informed. Of course you are going to have big troubles with Pits that aren't brought up right and every single type of dog out there can go nuts and attack. But dogs are breed to do a certain job and the job of Pits was to perform in blood sports. They are bred to have powerful jaws that lock down. For whatever reason, a perfectly well behaved Pit can come unglued. The problem isn't just with them, Chows for one are known to attack for no obvious reason. My stepson had a Pit, it seemed to be a nice enough dog but I didn't trust it for some reason. Whether to ban them or not, I can't say.

PS. To the Lab guys, my first Sheltie when it was a 12 week old puppy was attacked by a Black Lab. The wife took her for a walk and the Lab just came out of no where, grabbed her by the throat and started shaking her. He only released his grip when the wife kicked him.

Of all the breeds available, anyone who chooses one of these killer breeds must need the heads testing, especially if it's kept in a young family. But then the owners are unable to predict unwanted consequences.

Talking of 'all the breeds available', I saw someone with a bullnose terrier a few days ago; they're so ugly, and they're certainly not cuddly, and I wondered why on earth anybody would choose one. [IMG]

Clearly a dog whisperer :) The funny part is the "we train them" thing, doesn't have any barring on someone else's dog :)

See what I mean about doggy people being unable to rationalise? :wall: Definitely a gene thing.
