I would agree that back when countries were ruled by Christianity they were impoverished. But than again there was a renaissance and thus western culture slowly abandoned adherence to biblical literalism. With more and more countries with large Muslim populations becoming Islamic theocracis the opposite of the renaissance is occurring in the Islamic world.

First people are born into Islam and in many places authorities will hunt you down and kill you for leaving. In Islamic countries there are madrasas which are Islamic schools that indoctrinate children with this stupidity. The culture in Islam is completely dominated and controlled by Islam. No other ideas are allowed. Much like Christianity in the twelfth century.
