There is a culture of drinking but there is also a problem which might have to do with some inherent nutritional deficiency. Yes I've frequently been to both France and Italy - both make excellent wines and the people (in general) certainly know not to over indulge.

Some people know their limits while others do not , and end up as alcoholics.
alcohol abuse are the most common cause of cirrhosis of the liver . Having made my self sick in teenage , I stayed away from it until later in life when I was able to drink more responsibly . Vodka/ Whisky type drinks are not to my personal taste however I regularly enjoy a glass or two of Lord Dionysus' good grape.

Tobacco is the only drug I've been addicted to for many yrs (stressful occupation - ) + finally succeeded in kicking the habit abt 20 years ago.
Now in retirement, I'm trying my best to enjoy the good life. (wink)
