This arguing over party names, which is exactly what's being discussed, is silly. The "Democrats" in civil war times were the conservative party. The Democrats of 150 years ago have no relation to the Democratic party of today. It's not just a different subset of people, it's a different subset of ideology altogether. They are alike in name only, so it's disingenuous to look at either party back then and say that's the same party that exists today.
