Overall the elephant population is in decline due to overpopulation by humans and loss of habitat. In reserve areas elephants overpopulate these small areas and unfortunately some have to be culled. It's a sad commentary on Africa and I feel horrible for these very intelligent and social animals.

I expect a few Trumpets will support trump no matter what, but sure most will not support him on this
backdating it to protect hunters that already broke the law... how does that help? which rich friend or family member does this protect?

How does this encourage poachers? The heads have to be certified and have a huge amount of documentation and this so called lifting of Obama's ban is extremely limited in time and location. This is far from open season on elephants.

They broke no law. These were legal hunts meant to promote the health of confined herds. Having said that I could never shoot one of these intelligent and very social animals and question the sanity of anyone who could, especially for a ****ing trophy. It's very sad that human overpopulation has made this kind of culling of the herd necessary.

What in your opinion is the answer then? Elephants have been pushed to very confined reserves that can only support a certain number of elephants until disease and starvation take their toll. What's your answer?

It has only taken China 10 or 11 years to finally to start closing down the ivory trade. It is actually longer than that. It's time to close down the trafficking in other Asian countries as well. As a lad I was in Hong Kong and was infatuated with the artistry of the carving of Ivory. Today it can all be done with a 3-D machine using other materials.

How about we supply the Conservationist with drones to keep an eye on the herds and use them to bring the poachers to justice.

Poverty and culture pushes them to have big families. They rely on lots of children to support them in their old age

A lie told by liars, imo. If you want to help the natives teach them to use birth control.
Stop paying off their leaders and STOP STEALING their resources.

Where is the lie exactly? Are you saying elephants have not been pushed out of their historical habitat by human population expansion?

I believe they have been using drones and light aircraft to patrol the ranges elephants and other species are found in. I agree the trade needs to be ended. They've been trying to do that for decades.

However, from all reports I've read, the killers are local, and anything that could address that is a good thing. Making locals part of the solution by replacing the illicit income makes sense to me.

Most elephants have been hunted down and killed by native Blacks in recent times to be sent to the illegal ivory trade in Asia.

Ivory-seeking poachers have killed 100,000 African elephants in just three years, according to a new study that provides the first reliable continent-wide estimates of illegal kills. During 2011 alone, roughly one of every twelve African elephants was killed by a poacher.

In central Africa, the hardest-hit part of the continent, the regional elephant population has declined by 64 percent in a decade, a finding of the new study that supports another recent estimate developed from field surveys.

The demand for ivory, most notably in China and elsewhere in Asia, and the confusion caused by a one-time sale of confiscated ivory have helped keep black market prices high in Africa.

Legal hunters on the other hand, pay governments and their citizens to hunt a tiny percent of elephants in protected areas.

Virtually every nation in Africa where elephants live---or mainly used to live---are backward basket cases. Nations comprised of savages who are only thinking of themselves have no hope of preserving elephants or other endangered species.

The opposite of what I said.
If other nations would stop paying off leaders to put up foreign farms, agriculture all would be better off. And if the people there would act civilized all could live in " relative"harmany.

Go ahead, nobody's trying to stop you. You'll just have to supply drones, guards, operators, and associated hardware. That stuff's cheap, right? It's not like a lack of funding is the whole damn reason why these organizations allow trophy hunting, right?
