    Not mine.

I like beeswax, and I made them myself from my own beehives.

They also can be made from numerous organic sources as byproducts from food production.

If libs locked all the bees up in bee sweatshops and paid them only a fraction of what wasps and hummingbirds make they still could not meet the demand for candle wax.

You would be WRONG. I work for an insulation contractor. I do this for a living.

    Here, for you:

If the attic floor is properly insulated (as in NOT fiberglass insulation), then you don't NEED an attic fan, I don't care what the temperature of the attic space is. The soffit or gable vents should be more than enough ventilation for an attic space. By some insane chance you don't have ventilation in the attic, insulate the roof rafters with a closed cell foam... no ventilation needed!

    Their suggestion is asinine.

    Let's see:
    A: attic fan = $300.

B: Have underside of roof insulated with closed-cel insulation to prevent 90% of heat transfer from roof shingles to attic space = $5000 or lots more.

Yeah, its real clear you work for an insulation company!

As far as air conditioning running 100% of the time being "always true" in your estimation, I find your avocation to be ...odd... Why hire someone to insulate your house if the air conditioning is going to run 100% of the time when they are done?

I never said anything about air conditioning running 100% of the time. If a house is properly insulated, it will hold temp much longer and the A/C won't have to run constantly, that is the point.

The most cost effective way to insulate would be to air seal any penetrations between the attic and the conditioned spaces below (with foam kits). Yes, that means removing EVERYTHING in the attic, including flooring if you have it. Then, either dense pack the attic floor with cellulose (if you have flooring) or blow 8"-12" if you don't have flooring in the attic. Done deal. You now have a properly insulated attic, with material that air-seals as well as insulates all at a reasonable expense.

Their charge that installing that dumb attic fan with save you 10% on your bill is ridiculous and downright false advertising.

Some of those ideas are the same ones that Marine1 spoke about, he lives in AZ.

Let our poster know I have seen and felt the attic fans working, attic fans are a well known tool to keeping attics cooler. Then there are the heavy duty ceiling attic fans that draw all the air in the house out through the attic. I know they work when I house shopping years ago and had it demonstrated.

These are basic well used tools, and this poster is condemning them.

...and just how do you cut the power consumption of an electric arc furnace?

Do you reset the thermostat at a hospital to 65 degrees?

Well at least you implying that AC is not running all the time. Another energy saving tip; those cool nights, open up the windows, let the cool air in, then in the morning, shut the windows, and close the blinds.

Another tip, plant some trees by the house, their shade will keep sunlight off the house.

Those are good tips. The less light that enters the house, the cooler it will be. Trees shading the house is another. J don't have an electric attic fan, but I do have two turbo fans on my roof. As heat builds up in the attic, it turns the fans and extracts some of the heat as you know heat rises. No electricity required to use them

People don't realize how the color of your house and roof can really help. When repainting my block house white from tan, I left about a three foot square patch the old color. Then every day I would go out and put my hand on the tan and then the new painted white. The difference is amazing. In late morning, the white still feels cool while the tan is hot. By about 2:00 pm, the tan is burning hot and the white is warm. About 5 or 6:00pm, they are about the same. But the white kept most of the real hot heat out during much of the day. Allowing me to keep the A/C off longer. Try it out for yourself. Paint a small patch that get a lot of sun and test it.

Nothing will keep the heat from coming into your home. Not even heavy insulation in the attic. But you can slow it down and cut the amount of heat that enters your home.

I agree wiht 100% and more so because I know that you have gone through the process and have the experience.

The fact is, people shouldn't have to, just because Obama wants people to use less electricity.

I had to learn Robert because Arizona summers are so very hot and utility bills can get extremely high. Of course you also learn from your neighbors and family that do things to cut the heat down. That is why I say don't waste your money on those insulated windows. They do a good job of cutting noise, but save you only pennies in cutting down the heat. Three people that spent thousands told me that, including my Sister.

All of this is fine, but to offset this huge increase in electric rates, you'd have to reduce your consumption by 84%.

Why don't we try turning off all the heating and cooling, the lights and the computers at all EPA offices and labs.

    The EPA is the enemy.

it takes energy to power a economy, cripple the energy and you cripple the society

The reason that you have so many power problems is that you use too much power. Unneccessarily so. It's the exact same with the cars you drive and their fuel economy.

This is an extract from an article about how Guantánamo Bay is trying to reduce it's fuel costs:

"Jefferson-Smith decided it was time to make sure all five of her televisions were switched off before she left the house, and to turn down the air conditioning every morning before she left for work."

Seriously? She left 5 TV's on and the air-con on all day, when she wasn't in the house?????

    FK sake!!!

THERE IS NO "HUGE INCREASE" IN ELECTRICITY RATES

The auction for contracted PEAK POWER, a very small component of your electrical bill, went up 7.5%.

The OP articles assertion are BS.

    Obama is stupid.

The danger of serious environmental damage is very small whereas the certainty of jobs lost and higher energy prices is very great.

Obama told us in his own words that he intends for energy prices to "skyrocket" under his energy policies.

And now they are but Obama wants to pretend he didn't do it.
