Regardless of whether you agree with what Snowden did or not, it has nothing to do with freedom of the press.

It has a lot to do with your lack of freedom of press. In fact so bad is your concept of freedom of press that one of your journalists suggested a journalist should be arrested for investigative journalism.

Your country is really the sort of country I was brought up to believe the USSR is and most who come on forums go along with it, simply because you have no conception of how to look at issues. You are being watched. You do not have freedom of speech and yet like the truly brainwashed person, you complain about someone letting you know. Too scared to think I believe or simply that your lack of freedom of the press fails to give you information.

I seem to remember it was only a month or so ago that the US was trying to ban AlJazeera from being available to speak to your people and also that it had to agree to censor itself in order to do so.

Your country is a laughing stock of it's aims - and well losing it's place ...not just a little a big fall. Going to be interested to watch because although I was watching some of your human rights people working hard to get back some of the supposed values you have, I think it is too ingrained in most of you now, as this thread is witness.

You have any evidence for that?

The authoritarian regime he has to escape from right now is the USA. It seems he has and it's making people oh so mad!

ONCE AGAIN the USA makes baseless allegations against the Russians. You have to admire the Russian's patience!

It disturbs me to find myself on the other side of the fence from so many other posters on this forum. Well not really, I've always decides for myself where the fence goes.
    Snowden is an American hero.
If you think he's a traitor for telling the American public the government is spying on you then our definition of American differs. Stop following what the talking heads tell you to believe and grow a pair. Are you all so scared of Muslim Extremists your willing to undergo daily government rectal exams searching for them? They're cowardly punks.
I could care less what he needs to reveal to foreign countries to remain a free man. There are so few free men left these days I hope he remains so.

Snowden was not a traitor unless it is proven that he defected to the Chinese in which case it is likely he did what he did for profit rather than for liberty and gave them more than the PRISM program which was leaked to the press, however, you realize Rand Paul has stood up in defense of Snowden and begun a campaign for a class action suit against the NSA?

Snowden had a sitting well respected conservative Senator in his corner and the media (including right wing talk) on his side, if he defected to avoid the fate of Manning then he is stupid as unlike with Manning it has not been shown that he put anyone's life directly in danger the way Manning did with his data dump including CI's against the Taliban.

When I left my country for Western Europe in the early 50s, I left with the conviction as an all American kid about our unequaled American freedoms.

As time passed, I then wanted to retire in Western Europe but my wife wanted us to retire in the USA with our grandchildren because we had sent our children to American universities where they married fellow students & made their lives.

Since my wife had followed me all her life in my professional life in Europe, it was my turn to correspond & reluctantly I returned to my country a decade ago to retire & it was a major cultural shock for me of facts long forgotten about our country’s so called freedoms.

A couple of specific examples about our police state in relation to Western Europe:

If you remember the 2007 Oscar actor nominee in the movie, “In the Pursuit of Happiness,” the guy was jailed for, “UNPAID PARKING TICKETS” & we Americans think this is normal.

Nowhere in Western Europe is anybody jailed for unpaid parking tickets. Even in Spain, up to the mid 70s, in the Spanish Francisco Franco regime, there was nothing City Hall municipalities could do about 100s of thousands of pesetas of individual unpaid parking tickets with Spaniards driving junkyard cars that municipalities complained it cost several times more that what those cars were worth.

It wasn’t until the Socialist led by Felipe Gonzalez won the elections & that parliament finally enacted laws that would allow municipalities to freeze checking accounts over a couple of million pesetas to pay for those unpaid parking tickets. But then, Spaniards being what they are, they transferred their excess monies into the so called, “Cajas de Ahorros” that are the equivalent to our 401k accounts & were exempt from government seizures.

Another example was a couple of years ago in the Houston suburb of Pasadena, Texas where a man was beaten to death by Pasadena Cops in jail after they had arrested him, “ON SUSPICION OF INTOXICATION”

Nowhere in Western Europe is any person arrested for weaving on a public sidewalk so long as he keeps to himself without physically molesting others.

Half of the German population would be jailed by our standards during Fashing festivities where everything goes & it only gets better in the “Oktober” beer fest in Munich.

Spaniard stand 2nd to no one in public wine drinking during the running of the bulls in Pamplona where the “Peñas” go around with huge goatskin wine bags offering a squirt of wine to anyone & everyone.

    Very few people like traitors.

Saul renounced his son for being one.

    1 Samuel 20:30 =
Saul was furious with Jonathan and yelled, “You’re no son of mine, you traitor! I know you’ve chosen to be loyal to that son of Jesse. You should be ashamed of yourself! And your own mother should be ashamed that you were ever born.
    "

Saul would have gone ballistic over Snowden.

he isn't a traitor though. He has done nothing which comes under the legal definition of espionage and strange though it may seem, he was working for American freedom.

In order for him to be a traitor, he would have to give "aid and comfort" to America's enemies.

1)There is no evidence that anything on his laptop would give aid and comfort to China or Russia.

2)Neither China nor Russia are America's enemies, at least not officially (i.e. legally). China is a huge trading partner with the US. Do we give our enemies Prefered Nation status and get deeply in debt to them? And as for Russia, they just tried to prevent the Boston marathon bombing. Enemies? The Cold War is over, bro.

& in Rand Paul words not mine:

"If he cozies up to either the Russian government, the Chinese government, or any of these governments 'that are perceived still as enemies of ours,' I think that will be a real problem for him in history."

    My Reference: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/23/rand-paul-snowden_n_3486455.html

& it is obvious to anyone that Snowden is getting safe passage from these authoritarian regimes because of Snowden's collaboration with them.

Or are you saying they are giving him safe passage out of the goodness of their hearts?

But if you feel it's an authoritarian regime, you should go to that Russia that you admire so much.

    Nice try though, try again.

Of course, you completely failed to even address the fact that they AREN'T our enemies. Unless you count Rand Paul's statement that they might be "perceived" as such "by history". Which doesn't mean squat.

And you also fail to show that anything he might have given them was aid and comfort. Just because it's NSA data doesn't mean that it automatically qualifies. His laptop is not going to contain the NSA's "trove" of information. Laptops just don't hold that much. Not that it matters, since the government considers those countries our friends. You might as well be going on about how Germany and Japan are our enemies.

    Nice try, though.

    1) I admire every time Putin and his puppy switch chairs in the Great Democracy of Russia!
    2) I admired Putin when he broke world records in diving, fencing, cliff climbing, mark shooting, cooking, wresling, boxing, running, swimming and Origami!!!!, wow what a leader!! makes me want to bulid a huge golden statue of him!
    3) I admired the fact its a against the law there for some ppl to kiss or hold hands in public for the sake of the Russian race!, now that's freedom we all should betray our countries for!!!

To be honest, I think you have no idea how valuable your freedom is, ppl around the world would sacrefice their lives so their children would have what you take for granted every day, the culture of plenty, thats the US greatest problem in my eyes.

You seem to forget: The criminal in this game is the US-government and not Mr. Snowden.

A good person will resist an evil system with his whole soul. Disobedience of the laws of an evil state is therefore a duty.
